After the recent failure of one of my backup drives I looked at getting a NAS enclosure but the prices seemed a bit over the top for what I needed.

I've decided to add a raid 5 array into my new case but need a decent controller card.

It needs to have connections for 6-8 SATA II drives and have the ability to create multiple arrays. other than that I don't really know much about raid controllers or what makes a good one.

In the spur of the moment I brought one from a competitor, but their description wasn't correct and I need to sent it back as it only has 2 SAS ports but states "8 Internal SAS/SATA 3Gb/s Device Ports"

I'll be sending it back on Monday but have been told since that I should only really be looking at Dell and Megaraid cards.

The card I purchased is a Highpoint 2680LF

I'd appreciate any help in what I should be looking for.

That card has 2 x SFF-8087 ports, the same as a the latest LSI/Dell Perc (H700) cards.

Each of those ports takes a 'fan out' cable that turns them into 4 sas/sata connectors.

For what it's worth, I just got myself a Dell H700 (replacing a Perc 6).
