Hey,
I need to travel to Glasgow from London in 2 weeks time.
Will be renting a car ( have found nice deal on 3series  my first time in BMW lol )

What would be the fastest route to get there ? More or less how long it takes to drive ?

I hate M1(every single time I was travelling to yorkshire, there was a small accident on one lane and traffic james for 2 hours...) but there is no way of not using it is there....

Thanks for your help in advance

You could go up the M40, get the M42 around Birmingham then it's basically the M6 the rest of the way (it changes in the A74(M) and then the M74 when you are close to Glasgow).

I would fly though, or get the train. It's a boring as hell drive.

I hate driving at night...but may consider leaving at night. but it will add extra day for rental as well...

I would go on train but am not going myself...am taking my other half( for audition at BBC SSO :) ) and a cat ..yes ...a CAT! so car is reasonable option :)

I was thinking about going towards M40 and after Birmingham stick to M6...

+1 to flying.

All that hassle getting out of London.... Then more hassle from J8 > j15 and again around Thelwall.

You might start enjoying it when you get on the A74 but be careful to mind your speed... They love reaming Sassenachs up there !!

In fact, depending where in the smoke you're leaving from, I'd be tempted to Go up the A1 to A66 and over to Penrith and up the 6 > 74

All the roundabouts on the A1 north of Buckden have been bypassed and there are plenty of truckstops to get a decent bite on the way (Markham Moor etc)

I was just told ( maybe not truth) that there is a toll road which is private on which there is no speed limit ??
around Birmingham ? before or after...

There is a toll road, it's a dbfo (design, build, finance and operate - I believe) there are speed limits and police do check the area.

Sassenachs! thats a tounge twisting word lol

I will look in to A1-A66 as well.
Used A1 last time I was coming back from Selby (with the mentioned CAT ;) )

am leaving from SE London

What's the audition, and why are you taking a cat? I hope you're getting him tranqed first...

Have you read all the small print on your rental? It's very unusual to find a 'nice deal' on a 3 Series to rent in this country - the rental agencies are almost always a massive con for half decent stuff here. Whats the details of the deal you've managed, we'll see if we can spot the catch for you :p

I would imagine you can fly Business Class from Glasgow to London for less than it would cost to hire a 3 Series, fuel it, drive it from Glasgow to London and back and park it in London whilst you are there.

I tend to drive when I go to Scotland but only because I already have a car, if you need to start renting the economics fall apart against flying or even taking the train especially if your destination is as car-unfriendly as London.

audition is for playing with BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra

we are taking cat as we have literally no one to leave it with!!
We still are thinking about cattery...
if we decide to take the big boy with us, we will get something for him to keep him calm.
As long he is not in a cage/carrier, he doest mind being in a car:)
last time he slept on my missis lap all the way from Selby

hehe
it is direct from Sixt :) no catches :)
I say it will be BMW but it can be C-class or A4...

Just noticed that BWM is automatic...shame really :( need to think it over now lol

How much is it?

The Sixt website suggests £112 a day. Trust me - a rental 3 Series is not an experience worth paying £112 a day for! It'll be a base E90 as I doubt rental fleets are populated with F30's yet, if you think its some sort of super luxury car or something you are in for a shock :p

As long as you complete the M25 section by 06:00 you should be Hunky Dory

Depart SE London ... Dartford Crossing (M25 to M11) (or Blackwall) NC to M11

M11 to A14 to A1

Most of the traffic will be heading south at that time (even on the A14) so you should plod along nicely.

Flight with BA costs £150 return with BA for one person
Rental is around £140 with extra insurance.

There are cheaper flights but try to get an instrument on board and then all hell opens...BA would be only sensible option

I still try to pull out of this and make her fly by herself...but it seems she has a plan already lol
