Ok, i've just spent the last few hours fitting my new mobo and psu (i like to take my time with these things)...

However, now it is all in and plugged, i have a major problem in that i can't get into an OS normally. I have Windows XP and Ubuntu 7.10 on dual boot. If i try and boot into windows (even in safe mode) then the pc resets and starts from POST again. If i boot to Ubuntu i get a message telling me that it is running in basic graphics mode and i can only login in a Gnome session rather than Gnome with XGL. (This is where i am typing this from, and i can only select 640x480 or 800x600 for the desktop resolution).

System is as follows...

PSU: Corsair 520HX (was an Antec Truepower 430)
mobo: Abit AW9D-MAX (was an Asrock Dual-VSTA)
mem: 2x1Gb Geil 6400 low latency (was 2x512Mb Corsair XMS 3200 DDR)
cpu: Core2Duo 6400 (unchanged)
gfx: X1950XT 256Mb (unchanged)
hdd: Maxtor 80Gb SATA1, Maxtor 160Gb SATA1, Samsung 400Gb SATA2 (only the Samsung is new)
Floppy and DVDROM unchanged

I haven't reinstalled anything, just trying to boot from my current installs, and i'd rather not reinstall (especially Windows as i might have trouble with WGA etc since i have "lost my license").

I did initially have a GRUB error which was just due to the new Samsung drive being the slave to the main boot drive instead of the 160Gb Maxtor - i swapped the SATA connectors and got past this problem. Windows is installed on sda1 and Ubuntu on sdb1.

Please help... i was really hoping that this would be a smooth transition, but so far it isn't :( Hopefully this is due to some simple oversight or lack of knowledge on my part and will be fixed soon...

Thanks :)

You might need to re-install windows. Usually when I change the motherboard its a hit or miss if windows will boot from a previous install, oftens reboots, bsod n such.

new motherboard - new chipset. unfortunately you will need a fresh install of windows :(

Right, first things first....

I tried both sticks of memory individually in a different slot to either i already used and it made no difference whatsoever.

Secondly, no, this isn't a fresh Windows install, it's the one i was using with the Dual-VSTA board. If reinstalling windows is what it takes, then so be it (at least i can recover my data using Linux before i go ahead).

But i'm concerned that reinstalling Windows won't help since Ubuntu also has problems - then again, maybe Ubuntu's problems are the same as Window's in that i've changed the mobo!!

Thanks for the pointer - i'm going to format my new drive and back up my data on it then try a reinstall (probably Ubuntu first since it's quicker and my "profile" will be unaffected, and i trust Ubuntu to retain my dual boot more than i do Windows ;) )

Fingers crossed....

I think you are wasting your effort in avoided re-installing windows. Just do it. A new windows install is one of those things we try to avoid but once you do it and, get a few things installed, is like a new start and you forget all the carp you had on the previous install.

Aye, it makes sense... In fact, my current Windows install is ancient and stems back to the days before i installed Ubuntu. All i use it for now is games so a new install really will be worth it - it's just such a ballache

The task is underway now anyway - well, copying Documents and Settings to my new hdd is underway anyhow! Hopefully a fresh OS will cure my problem (the pc related one at least!)

Cheers for the help guys :)
