Help me please!

As for GTA:IV being played online, yes, it will be played a hell of a lot online. As will single player, but I will definitely be playing lots and lots online. :D

Thanks for all of the input so far.

Well since its right net to you pc I guess you will not be needing wireless to get it online, and given the fact that the ps3 controller is with out a doubt the worst on the market I would suggest you get gta4 with a 360 pro.

if I had unfettered access to the 360 and I could easily afford the PS3 then I'd go for that. Otherwise I'd get the 360 because its an awful lot cheaper and the game will probably be nigh on identical.

Got to say things like resistance and gran tourismo swing in in sonys direction.. then halo and project gotham swing it back to microsoft.

I have neither but I've had a ps1/ps2/xbox and a 360 and to be honest I think when I go back into console gaming I'll probably buy both.

This really is a last resort, as I REALLY didn't want to ask this on here. But I'm left with no choice.

Basically, GTA:IV is coming out (obviously), and I want it. And I want it badly. So badly that I will be buying a next gen console to play it on, but that's the problem. Normally I would have bought it on the 360 without thinking about it, solely due to the price and the fact a lot of my friends will have it on the 360. But my brother has a 360. This doesn't detur me too much, but I just think that I may as well get a PS3 for the variety. Would having two 360s in the same house be that much of a big deal?

Ok, I know the can of worms that I've opened up asking this, so here is what I would like:

1) Post stating the good and bad points of one, or both consoles.

2) Do not quote, or reply to other peoples posts for any reason.

3) In addition to the good and bad points, if you could give some of your actual thoughts and feelings towards the consoles themselves, that would be appreciated.

I know this is futile, and I know how this thread will probably end up... But I'm really stuck.

Thanks for any half decent posts. :p

Ok reasons for PS3 (if you own a 360)

1) Free online, you wont need to pay 2xlive subs to play both online, its not as robust in features as xbox live though (yet)
2) Blu ray player as stated earlier it is the next gen Disk format now and has already seen a 351% improvement in sales from last year where as DVD have dropped a few %
3) The only Console guaranteed to be playing MGS4 and FF13, confirmed as exclusives far to many time to list.
4) Sony Franchise games, games such as God of War, Gran Turismo etc, with both 360 and PS3 you wont miss out games such as these.
5) More choice of addons, not restricted to MS only products ie being able to use logitech wheels, 3rd party (cheap) controllers, and what ever size laptop drive you can afford rather than the overpriced MS HDD.
6) Quieter in operation
7) Better upscaling DVD player (according to AV peeps)
8) Can be used as a heater in the winter :D

Reaons not to get PS3
1) Some people dont get on with the original sixaxis, ones with the 40Gb are better but the Dual shock 3 is far better though, may be an idea try before hand.
2) Its not Xbox live, no acheivments, no gamer score, PSN is quieter ie not as many with headsets.
3) Youre a microsoft Fanboy and hate Sony :D
4) PS3 has fewer games out and older ports are not always as good graphically
5) PS3 is more expensive.

If you think the extra GTA4 DLC is worth missing out on FF13, MGS4, God of war 3, GT5 in the future well so be it, i guess you brother will get it for his and the DLC at a later date though?

Get a PS3. The only way in which the Xbox meaningfully wins at the minute is the extra year's back catalogue of games but you will have access to them anyway if you want them.

That's what I was hoping for, an opinion from someone that owns both. For the record, my console would be sat right next to my PC. So I'm not sure if that compromises some of the media capability that the PS3 has over the 360? That's one thing that has always really annoyed me about the 360, the fact that it can only play .wmv... I mean what the hell?! :p Who encodes their stuff to .wmw? Thanks for your post by the way. :)

The 360 can play Avi, WMV and MP4 from what ive tried so far. Not sure about other formats. MKV is also pretty easy to play as it takes around 5 mins for me using gotsent to convert 2GB mkvs to mp4 as it's only extracting it not encoding.

I still am :D

If the 360 is nexto the PC like mine, it'll play every common video format you throw at it, bar MKV's I think. Even then you can use Transcode360 to play it or just convert the file itself.

If you're desperate to get GTA IV and that's going to be the major deciding factor - then get a 360. The downloadable content really wins the fight vs the PS3 version. No matter what Sony fanatics will say, that really is the only difference between the 2 versions. Plus you said that lots of your friends will be getting the Xbox version - what's the point of having it on PS3 with fantastic multiplayer when you haven't got anyone to play it with?

And yes, I have both consoles. And I have the 360 version on preorder.

If it's a more general gaming experience then - well, depends on what you want to play. I say, follow the games. Look at what exclusives are coming out on each and decide which you'd rather be playing. The thing is, both consoles are coming down in price anyway, whichever you miss out on now, you could get in the future perhaps?

To be honest, if you have a 360 already, I don't see why you would want to get another. I mean sure you can LAN them... but games have splitscreen already and you'd be missing out on PS3 exclusives.

here we go again

PS3 imo,

I've owned both a couple of times now, and the PS3 wins out I feel, my personal plus points over the 360 are, (this is my own list).

PS3 Pro's

1) Built in wireless.

2) Built in blue-tooth.

3) Built in power supply unit.

4) Blu-Ray. (Arguably one of the most future proof players on the market)

5) Whisper quiet.

6) Better Build quality.

7)The ability to upgrade your hard drive using standard third party 2.5" Sata drives.

8) Free on-line gaming.

9) The ability to use third party steering wheels & Headsets.

10) Internet Browser.

11)No forced advertising on your XMB.

12)Higher quality audio. (This is not opinion, it is fact)

13)Bountiful amounts of 'techy' options to play around with from DVD filtering to Audio bit-mapping etc, the PS3 is a 'gadgeters' dream.

14)The ability to remote control your PS3 from your PSP, now with the added audio out via PS3 during remote play you don't even need to turn on your TV, you can essentially use your PSP as an advanced remote control to use your PS3 as a high quality Hi-Fi component.

15)No official memory card needed to back up games saves.

16)Controller recharger included as standard. (plus easy to upgrade via use of cheap third party longer life battery's)

Future Pro's

17)PlayTV

18)Home

PS3 con's

1) Multi-Platform Titles are often allot poorer on the PS3.

2) Lack of AAA exclusives.

3) Controller is not very ergonomic

4) Lack of Gamertags/Game Histories/Player Ratings

5) Console is more expensive

Thanks for all of the useful comments so far. :)

I don't seem to be any clearer as to what I want though. :( :p Everytime I think "hmm, I think I'll go for a 360." I then think "what about all of the exclusive PS3 titles, and blu-ray..." Then everytime I think "maybe I should go for a PS3" I think "but I'd miss out on playing GTA:IV with my friends." That and the cost of the PS3 are the two things that are making this a difficult decision. I think I'm ever so slightly leaning towards a 360, but I'm by no means certain.

If it's any help, I have two 360's and a PS3 in my home and it's just so nice being able to get the best of both worlds. I would seriously get a PS3 for PS3 exclusives like GT5, MGS etc. and buy all other games for the 360 as they tend to be better. Buy GTA4 on the 360 and play it on your brothers and let him play on your PS3.

LAN gaming between 2 360's is no where near as good as having a 360 and a PS3. Take it from me I know ;)

I guess it comes down to how well you get on with your brother. If he will let you use his for hours on end playing gta then you might as well get a PS3.

If on the otherhand he won't let you near the thing the majority of the time, then get which ever one has the most games you want.

End of the day your only going to miss a few games either way, so it's not a big problem.

I've just been looking at the games for both on Gamespot, hoping to be swayed. But if anything, it's put me off buying a console all together. Is it just me, or is the line up of titles on both, including upcoming titles, rather poor? GTA:IV looks awesome, but that's about it for me. I don't think there was one game on either platform in the top twenty that I would want to buy... A bit disappointing to be honest. :(
