Help me setup RDS into our existing setup?

Hi guys,

Just after some advice really here on the best way forward!

We have one physical server running Server 2008 R2, with Hyper-V on it.

Virtual Machines are:
1x Exchange
1x DC
1x File/print/Sage etc

We are looking at setting up RDS (Remote Desktop services) in to our setup, mostly to use the web application features.

Not really sure whether it is best to set this up on the physical server as RDS uses virtualisation, but I like to keep the physical box doing pretty much nothing apart from Hyper-V. Or, set it up on the file/print/sage server, and then setup the virtualisation bit only on the physical box. Any help would be great :)

The physical server is currently a DC also which I know is bad, but I will soon be setting up another virtual machine as DC02 and move the main roles onto the virtual DC01, and then finally demote the physical server.

Cheers,

Mal

I'm not 100% sure what you are trying to do, do you want users to be able to access sage on the f/p/s server? In that case just set up RDS on that VM. If this was just 4 physical servers it would be obvious what to do, don't overthink things just because they are VMs.

Well, yeah, and other apps also, Office apps etc via the web interface. Only reason I ask is when I set it up it asks where I want to host the virtual machine part and goes on to require Hyper V, so I imagine I cannot install it on a virtual machine?

Cheers,

Mal

Just skimming though the RDS stuff (only used TS before), it seems that what you are trying to set up also includes Remote Desktop Virtualization Host (RDVH) which i belive is MS's implementation of VDI. Can you not install Remote Desktop Session Host on its own?

Hello,

Yes that's correct, we've set it all up now, without the VDI feature, although we might want to look at that in the future.
