Help me understand music

Funnily enough one of the biggest up and coming rock bands GHOST recently did a cover of It's A Sin :)

It's mad how theirs so much good music out there that your average joe just will not here because this stuff is not really in the mainstream. Bands like Ghost ect are a nice abeit a big niche with Metallica and Iron Maiden at the top.

Hope that makes sense!

I think a big difference between music today and several decades ago is the only way you can make it mainstream today is by signing your soul away to a record label, good luck getting on something like the BBC as an independent band.

I also think that imperfections in music/vocals can enhance it but everything has become autotuned and robotic.

Well Ghost are my favourite band at the moment and out of all the concerts I've been since 1971, their's last year at Nottingham beats anything.

I've seen Ghost 4 times I think it is, first time was at the Kentish Town Forum, then I saw them at one of the mainstages at Wacken Open Air, then the Globe Arena in Stockholm and last december in Budapest. Their shows have always been spectacular and they keep growing stage wise too. It's a great show and they really do get the crowds going. For me Ghost is one of those bands that are pretty good albumwise, but live they are super.

I can't say this enough: get playing with other people. A good half-way if you're worried about ability is record yourself and play with it, overdub, harmonise etc. Practice your ear in having to listen to another player and lock-in with them on timing etc. If you can get that then you;re good to go. You;ll find people similar to you, and better than you, who will happily help you along. Music is so much about playing with people. Just make sure it's a style you're interested in. No good teaming up with a folkie if you're into hard rock. They'll be doing some fiddle and asking you to strum quietly while you're wanting to powerchord up to 11.

Playing music is easy*, writing something original that people actually want to listen? That's the hard part!

I disagree that there are no "iconic" bands either - however they tend to only be "iconic" within their genre/community.

Because of how "pop" music has evolved into blandness to cater to "everyone", anyone creative who steps outside of that mould tends to be marginalised.

* relatively speaking - enough practice and I'm pretty sure anyone could pick up a guitar and a tab book and play even the most complicated of tracks
Yes, I agree entirely, yes you have to dig into various genres that aren’t necessarily mainstream, but talent and innovation is everywhere. I’d say 90%+ of musicians/bands gleaned their inspiration from the past, but then the cycle of evolve, evolve, evolve, occurs.

I speak as a professional musician (Piano, drums, guitar, violin), as a DJ, and as a released artist (dance music sub-genre).
