Hey all, little help please :)

Im in the forces and going over to the happy place again later this year.

last time I took a small acer "ultra-Portable" netbook/laptop. It didnt get on well with the dust or heat and was a massive PITA. This time i want to take a Tablet for size and lack of fans.

I NEED it to be able to play .Avi from a portable hard drive i.e no external power to the HDD.

Android is by far my preference.

Don't care overly for 3g, but it needs wifi.

Battery is quite important although hopefully i'll have access to power most of the time.

Is there anything like this on the market? I dont mind if it needs to be rooted etc to get it working, im quite happy to do that.

Cheers guys:)

Try and pick up a second hand TF101 with a dock, works well with and external hdd.

Regards.

Mine now languishes until l need it for trips abroad

Yes. The dock has the usb connections. It's also useful for the extra battery life it supplies and that it can stand up on its own.

This really the only tablet that can use a USB HDD?

For reliability l would stick with Asus, my TF101 has managed a few trips to KAF so far, and only lost the rubber feet on top of the keyboard.

The newer versions of the Asus tablet will do the same job just cost a lot more, esp with the new Quad core chip.

I hang if off my wall and use it as a clock while OOA and supplement it's very poor internet surfing experience with a 11.6" laptop.

Can the asus nexus 7 power a usb hdd if i rooted and used stick mount?

To open up your options could you not get a few SD or micro SD cards to use instead of the HDD?

Not really, im gonna be away for months at a time, and the movies/tv are all passed around on hdd's, SD's really wouldnt work out great.

Plus its would mean my full 2.5" 1TB HDD would go to waste..

Perhaps if i got a usb y cable, and put one into my tablet and one into a mains via a female-female adapter and iphone plug to usb thingy.. The only problem (if it works) is using 2 sockets (which are at a premium..)?

EDIT:

Infact, what about a powered USB Hub, which i could then power the HDD and the tablet off?
