Help Media Studies

Didn't read this before but at A level I studied ICT & Media (and physics) and am now doing a degree in Marketing. I'll be rich! :p

YOUR ABSOLUTELY KDDING ME!

Im taking ICT, media, physics and geography. and am considering a uni degree in marketing.

Wicked i need to talk to you more.

This for GCSE? Where you get the paper before the exam and you are supposed to write your answers and then remember for the exam?

Yep the exam is that, we also get a 15 minute break in the middle ^^. But the whole idea is that you go and research it and then when you go into the exams there are extra questions asking you for your ideas. The exam lets you think for yourself do your ideas and design work.

Its a good new modern way of thinking in the exam and is much superior to other exams. I think they could have done it better and without a 15 minute break in the middle (maybe taking it a bit too far) but i've revised like crazy and still am not totally confident.

I'd like to think im quite clever and most certainly am not a dosser, media is a closer study version of english and please only judge if you've taken the subject. Those who have, seem to have done the best posts so far. :)

what the hell does your mate have to do with this? He's not doing anything media related by the sounds of things!

??? so someone working at a major media buying agency spending millions of pounds buying advertising and planning campaigns has nothing to do with media  get a grip!

Double A level ICT IS a complete joke. I got 90% in it and I didn't even do the last of the 12 units! None of it is any use in the real world or in further studies at degree level anyway.

Media Studies is one of the least respected degrees at university but if you want to study it you shouldn't let that put you off.

No, i think media should be more respected. But i appreciate many people look down at it. which is why im doing 3 respected a-levels and then media is a 4th and gets respected depending on the uni.

ICT Physics and geography will be a base for which i hopefully get into uni with.

The media is a plus, but first i gotta do the GCSE. Final exams soon so....

P.S

The orgional post doesnt matter now as ive done it without you guys, but still i created an interesting debate so continue... :)

I can see the merit of media as a subject but the degrees I've seen aren't as rigorous as other academic degrees really. No exams at all in the last two years and although there are practical projects, this is the equivalent of coursework in other subjects so it seems a bit of an easy option to me.

When I did it we split it across two days, so I did Q1+2 first day then Q3+4 second, made it easy for revision :) My exam was on Soap Press I think. You have to make a storyboard? Hate making them :D

What did you get in coursework? As long as you make good answers and have a good memory you should be fine.

Cheers mate, erm we have to do storyboards too :( hate them too lol.

Na we just get a 15 minute break, guys seriously think about the exam now, it just wouldnt work if they didnt give you the questions in advance so i dont get what your jibber jabbering about.

As for courseowrk im on an A after doing CD covers DVD covers and a practical production from creating my own company. I really enjoy the subject its totally what i made it out to be.

Your media studies sounds a lot different to mine, my A level comprised of:

Film trailer, 3500 word independent study and 4 Exams. (Got 94% overall, with 100% in 4 units, because I'm awesome. Didn't want to carry on at English so chose Media, had an A* English GCSE to carry me forward. Woop.)

Good Luck, it's definitely interesting and modern.

I've got an economics exam coming up soon for uni and it's a prerelease exam question, just because you can have the opportunity to learn a model answer doesn't make it much less easy. With exams you usually know the topic, and this just helps you able to produce a better answer, which is then marked accordingly.

I didn't have to do storyboards in the exam. I had to make a magazine front cover for a music magazine - pretty easy :D

Think about a more general business degree with modules in marketing - marketing is very specific and unless thats absolutely 100% what you want to do might not be the best route forward.

Lol, bit of a silly thing to say. Where else do you discuss Kierkegaard, L. Ron Hubbard and the Taxi Driver killing scene all in the space of 3 hours?

The pub?

Why do you say that? Have you studied it or are you just going by generalisations? Do you think English is a joke subject?

I actually do consider English as a joke subject as I got an A for it with sod all effort on my part, although that could also be attributed to dazzling natural ability on my part. Or excellent teaching :)

Mind you, a "proper" degree course has to have at least 20 hrs a week of timetabled classes and you can usually tell a good University by the absence of a media studies department ;)
