Hi folks,

20 pin to 24 pin problem... Not 10 to 12 as in title !!!

Just building a M-ATX system with the ASUS P5QL-EM MOBO and the OCZ stealth stream 500w PSU as recommended by overclockers. I am using an Intel Quad Core CPU. However I have just discovered that the ASUS Mobo has a 24 pin socket and the PSU that I have has a 20 pin plug.

What do I do ??? Do I need an adaptor or another PSU ???

I am using an Silverstone Evolution M-ATX box which is nice in itself, but have just discovered that the SATA plugs point outwards which collides nicely with the HDD bays !!! I might be able to get some 90degree sata cables to fit.

So what about the PSU issue? Any advice really appreciated.

Thanks,

Sam

you can buy a PSU adapter to convert 20 pin to 24 here

although i ran a system with a 20 pin connected to a mobo with a 24 pin connector without a converter for 3 years with out a prob

Very quick feedback. Thanks.

Yes I have just noticed the 4 connector - it has a yellow, orange, read and black wire. Are you saying that the 4 pin cable and the 20 pin cable should BOTH go into the MOBO 24 pin socket?

Just tried to reinsert the cable. The PSU 10 pin cable will plug into the first 20 pins of the MOBO 24 pin socket leaving 4 empty. I tried to plug the other 4 pin into this without success, but is this not the CPU 4 pin socket - this does fit in that socket.... So perhaps the main ATX plug is some form of universal 20 pin plug that will fit 20 and 24 pin sockets ????

What do you think?

Are you sure there isn't another 4 pin cable coming from the PSU that will fill the extra four slots on the motherboard? One that isn't the CPU cable, that is.

I have one big cable that is bound together with a 20 pin and a 4pin. There may be another cable elsewhere, I will look.

I have just tried it, and the green light comes on, but nothing else happens. Even the PSU fan is inactive. Not sure if this is some sort of sleep mode or something more fundemental.

OK. I think I have found another cable which fits well into the CPU socket. It has 2 yellow and 2 black cables. The other 4 cable lead had 1 red, 1orange, 1 yellow and 1 black. I have now plugged this in correctly. The PC starts up, well the fans go, but nothing on the monitor. After a while the PC shuts down. Now I am wondering whether this latter problem is to do with the CPU over heating since I am having problems with the CPU fan clipping down properly. Perhaps I have to be firmer.

Any advice please. I seriously hope I have not damaged anything, although I am a tad worried about this 4 pin pwer plug going into the CPU plug although the PSU did not start up at all.... so perhaps some safety feature kicked in...I hope so....

Would you expect the BIOS bootup screen to appear without doing anything extra?

Really would appreciate some advice here...

Phew.... I think.... A lesser problem. I have found out that it is to do with the RAM when using more than 2 2GB sticks. All the sticks are fine. The main yellow RAM slots are fine, but the black ones are not. This may be a config issue or something else. I am unsure...

Any advice greatly appreciated.

Just discovered that this is about the limitation of my mobo. My Dimms are Corsair 800Mhz 2gb sticks which are DS. My Mobo only supports 4 * SS DIMMs although it will support 8GB in total. It seems that the only way it can do this is by using 2* 4GB DS sticks in the yellow slots(A1,B1). I am slightly frustrated by this as I bought these 4 2GB sticks for this board as recommended by OC - but better than a previously suspected damaged CPU or MOBO !! One lives and learns perhaps!!! Perhaps a BIOS upgrade may sort this situation if this type of issue is BIOS sortable ?????
