I don't know what they charge these days, They had a system that you plug the ECU into and it tested it via a phone line to a central computer that run some diagnostic tests on it.
It might just be a bad connection on the multiplug to the ECU if your lucky.

Rather basic but simple way :

Remove power plug from ECU.

Pull the spark plug out of cylinder #1. Stick finger in spark plug hole. Have an assistant turn the engine over for 1-2 seconds (one-one thousand, two-one thousand).

If compression is fairly good, your finger will be blown out of the spark plug hole. If not, you'll only get a little blowby of your finger.

Put spark plug back in #1 and repeat process with #2, #3 and #4 and compare the results.
