I don't know what they charge these days, They had a system that you plug the ECU into and it tested it via a phone line to a central computer that run some diagnostic tests on it.
It might just be a bad connection on the multiplug to the ECU if your lucky.

After a bit of research it does sound like this could be the problem, but it seems that the coils should always be replaced with the newest type or the ECU could fail again shortly after. http://www.peacockandpurvey.co.uk/peugeot_1_4_206__306_sagem__sl.html

Have you done a compression check?

That would eliminate a whole colostomy bag of other possible faults.

Rather basic but simple way :

Remove power plug from ECU.

Pull the spark plug out of cylinder #1. Stick finger in spark plug hole. Have an assistant turn the engine over for 1-2 seconds (one-one thousand, two-one thousand).

If compression is fairly good, your finger will be blown out of the spark plug hole. If not, you'll only get a little blowby of your finger.

Put spark plug back in #1 and repeat process with #2, #3 and #4 and compare the results.
