Hi,

Friends laptop motherboard is damaged, turns out it got damaged while using the officail power supply. Power supply was faulty as ther was no out put when using volt meter on it.

Changed power supply & laptop would still not switch on.

I then dismantled the laptop thinking it was a blown DC power jack port, to discover that one of the black square soldered parts (for got it's name) has melted as shown below.

Can this be repaired or is a new motherboard required.:(

If its partner next to it is the same chip you can read its model and replace it (best if you can find someone else with the board and check) at any decent laptop repair shop. However if its not just that chip then it would still not work.

I can easily desolder and resolder it, just takes a steady hand a decent iron. That may not be the problem, and just a symptom.

For the record, Laptop PSU's only send out millivolts until a load is required, so testing with a voltmeter is pretty much no good!

Hi, sorry forgot to mention model this board is from (Asus X51L Laptop).

It looks like a new motherboard is needed but I can't seam to find one anywhere on the net.

Would anyone be willing to help me find one?

Asus X51L Laptop
One of the numbers on the board is (E89382 J) & another is printed near the Ram (NS1S860906-02849-NQNMB2000-A03).

Don't know which one the model number is; hopefully one of these numbers is it.

Would be very grateful for any more help, as I have tried ebay & most sites I can think of but still no luck in finding a replacement for this asus motherboard.

I'm guessing it's not under warranty? If so then getting a new laptop will probably be cheaper I'm afraid!

You could always try and contact Asus and ask them how much a replacement motherboard will be...

Going to put the laptop back together & get him to take it to a local shop that should be able to replace this part on the motherboard.

Did not think anywhere near us did that sort of motherboard repair, but I have managed to find a pc/laptop repair shop that does so hopefully they are able fix it.

Local shop said they can test the motherboard & replace any damaged components, & that it would probably cost £70 to £90 to debug and repair the motherboard.

I have searched everywhere for a motherboard replacement for this laptop, but there just does not seam to be one to be had.

Do you think the rough estimate they gave is right or should it be lower?

I have now put the laptop back together & handed it back.

you've only given ocuk fans 3 days to work on it, i've only just seen this post so therefor i'd wait another 2 days atleast for more input from ocuk fans, plus a lot of parties happen at weekends...

did you get intouch with asus? if so how much is a new motherboard... also ask them if they know of any places you can get hold of spare parts... aswell as if they would fix it for a charge if warrenty is out of question.

i just googles - Asus X51L spare parts and found the link below, try them

http://www.asusparts.eu/

try some D.I.Y at soldering, if that fails take it to the guy offering to fix it for £90 and get your moneys worth after you had a go lol

I handed it back & given him the price the shop quoted.

Now that this melted square has been found, there is not really anything I can do apart from new motherboard witch so far I can’t find.

I do have a solder thing that would probably do the job, but don’t know where to find a replacement for the damaged black piece in the photo. I am just slightly worried that if I had a go with my solder kit that I might damage it even more.

To contact Asus do they have a contact e-mail for parts etc, as I will contact them & see what they say. I am guessing they will no longer stock this model or charge more than anywhere else would, but will se what they say.

have you checked out the site i linked? they stock all kinds of parts etc for old and new asus, not sure what asus could do to be honest,

try googling all references towards what you're in need of, if you find out what the parts that you know are completely gone that is, give me another 10 mins on it an i'll see what else i can find.... it is saturday night hehe i been pre-occupied a little lol

I just had a look at that link i linked, you may want to actually contact that site for advise, they do stock bits for your modle but i'm a little wasted currently so wasn't 100% what i was looking at lol

I did find this link on that site i linked http://support.asus.com/contact/contact_right.aspx?no=339&SLanguage=en-us

it mentioned something bout asus world support centrew

As I said I have now handed the laptop back, & the owner will make his mind up where he is going to take it to get repaired.

I had it for most of this week, but could not find a motherboard or a replacement for the small black melted peace.

The motherboard can be repaired it looks like, so I would rather he takes it to get repaired as this would be the most sensible option & most likely the cheaper option .

Don’t think there is any point in me trying to do any soldering to it as I have never done this before, & I can’t find any replacement black square for it.

A repair to the motherboard must be cheaper than a complete replacement of the motherboard.

I have done all I can, & think I will leave it up to him what he does with it next.

It’s not as if I was being paid to take a look at it or anything, I just volunteered to take a look as I thought it was possibly the power socket on the back.

The power socket turned out to be one that is soldered on instead of a clip on one. I would not have attempted to repair that as I would rather an expert that does this sort of solder repair fixed it, as the laptop is not mine & I would not want to make any mistake & damage the motherboard beyond repair.

Laptop was handed back to the owner yesterday, so as I said above I will leave it for him to take it to get repaired or what ever he wants to do.

I am still possibly considering trying to get a replacement motherboard for my friends (Asus X51L) laptop, as I might have found a possible solution.

I have found a used Asus 'X58L' motherboard on the net, & it looks completely identical to the ‘Asus X51L’ laptop motherboard that I am looking for.

I was wondering if anyone knows if the processor from the asus X51L would work ok on an Asus X58L motherboard, or is the cpu not going to work as it’s a different board & therefore not at all compatible.

Would be very grateful for any help,

Thanks.

They are both socket p cpu's so they should fit ok if the motherboards are completely identical but i'm not a pro when it comes to laptops. I've looked around and the motherboard does look the same, i think both laptops are just a different spec but same board.

Here are both cpu details.

Thank you very much ‘ste-sim2x9’ for the info on these cpu’s.

Was just thinking of this as a solution as there are a couple of these Asus X58L mobo’s on the net, & they look to be almost identical to the one in my friends Asus X51L.

Being that they are both socket P cpu’s, surely my friends X51L cpu would be compatible with the X58L mobo or is frequency/bus speed/clock multiplayer a big problem.

Not knowing very much about compatibility between laptop mobo/cpu, I need all the help I can get.

Would be most grateful to any more help, just needing to know if the asus X51L cpu would be compatible with an x58L mobo.

Thanks.

Like i said matey i don't know much about laptops but the both cpu's are socket P and have the same amount of pins, same electrical/thermal paramiters, same size. All that i can see different is that the X58L cpu is 2 GHz and the X51L cpu is 1.86 GHz. So i'm sure the X51L cpu should be fine in the X58L motherboard.
