Help - my mechanic has failed me!

sadly that does very much look like the fill hole

why was it having new box oil anyway?

It had some additive to try and improve it. I paid a lot of money recently and had every bearing in the box replaced. It hasn't fixed the whine from the box and I assume this was an attempt to improve it.

10/10 for his effort.

Sump and filler plugs don't just jump out willy nilly. Tell him you want a replacement box, I'm not quite sure I can help you diagnose "noise" but if you are having multiple gearchain/drivechain issues that were not there before his efforts to improve the quality of the box then dump it on him and tell him you require a reconditioned box and inspection. Evidenced.

He didn't recondition the box, it was sent to a transmission place somewhere near I believe... Exeter.

I think I am going to have to stamp my feet, but its not something that I am good at! He said he'll take it for the day when I get back and go over it. He said if the box is damaged he will get it sorted.

I should have been more concise, he foots the bill. I wouldn't want him touching it again personally although I know that isn't the easiest when taking back a car for poor workmanship.

Just make sure you are happy with it before you take it from him, he's on a significant loss now so I'd let him know that you expect it to be better than when it was originally dropped off, since that was the original brief.

it will be fine i drove for 60 miles in a car with no gearbox oil in all

mods can we please have DannyW banned from posting his drivel in motors?

it will most certainly not be fine, if it has been ran with as little oil as the OP as suggested then there will most likely be some sort of damage either minor or major having occurred.

at least your mechanic sounds like he gives a monkeys though OP,

going by your later post though i'd be inclined to get the AA to truck it home and ask your mechanic to make it right.

According to the AA man the box takes 1.9L and it took 1.6L to refill it. I have the bottles in the car (one empty one 400ml left) and the AA report to say it took 1.6 litres.

I don't know how to play this, but the noises are a genuine concern.

He sounds decent enough to try and fix it, and recognises he made a genuine mistake.

Emphasise that you're not happy with it, and see what he offers. Go in and be reasonable to begin with. There's no point getting frustrated right from the start... It'll probably only aggravate him. Just make sure you're firm about what you want.

Ouch!

I'll let you know how I get on, I'm not heading back to Cornwall until Sunday though.

Thanks for all the advice :)
