Hi

I recently installed a ati x1950 pro agp into the following system

amd 64 3400
asus K8VSEDX
2gb corsair value select pc 3200
160gb hd
dvd rom drive
dvd writer drive
floppy drive
360 watt no name brand psu

I thought the psu would be fine running the ati x1950 pro as i had been running a nvidia 6800gt overclocked for some time without any high pitched whining noise from the psu.

The computer is running fine with the ati x1950 pro installed but its just the noise from the psu is getting on my waz and i cant live with it for much longer so could anybody reccomend a suitable psu for my old system.

thanks.

An unbranded psu is not suitable for use with a medium or high end graphics card, or indeed a medium or high end system. Definitely needs replacing.

Depending on your requirements, get a psu 400w+ from Antec, Enermax, FSP, Tagan, Seasonic, OCZ or Corsair.

I recommend you look look into getting an Antec case and psu bundle because these are very good value, you get a very good case and a very good psu for a low price. I think the Antec psus are about the cheapest decent psus you can get. Obviously if you've already got an expensive case this isn't much good but if you haven't its definitely worth considering.

when i build my new rig im going to put one of these in it PSU
these are said to be real good
Yes those are very good but i'm guessing the op requires the cheapest decent psu he can get so the corsair would be overkill as you pay a premium for modular cables, an ultra quiet cooling system etc.

That would work fine, but as i say you can get a Antec case with a 380w psu included for £10 less, so you should consider that unless you want to keep your current case.

Also you could probably manage with the 380w if you don't want to spend too much on it.

My system is made by a well known 4 letter computer company would it fit.
As far as i know dell aren't a competitor, and if its dell its likely that it wouldn't fit as they use non-standard connectors...

If it isn't dell it should be ok providing the psu is not mAtx.

Edit: Judging by the board it uses its not a dell in which case it should be ok, as long as it fits in the case... all the more reason to consider getting an Antec case and psu bundle which would eliminate that potential problem...

I think you've answered your own question there as to why there is a noise ;) Anyway, I'd look at maybe an enermax liberty 400W for that system :)

Hi

Changeing the psu is a big enough step for me i dont think im ready for pulling everything out of my case and installing it in another i could just bye a hole new system and be done with it but i just spent £150 on the x1950 pro.

Its not a dell

Its very easy to install into a new case, and you won't have to do anything messy like removing heatsinks and such.

However, if you don't want to do that thats fine.

Is there a tight budget for this, are there any special requirements such as low noise or modular cables?

About the cheapest really good psu you can get is one of these: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-006-SK

So if its just an old system that needs a working psu that would be a good choice.

You'll need to check the dimensions of the current psu to make sure its not mAtx though. Or if its easier take a pic of it in the case with the case open and we should be able to tell if its mAtx or standard.
