Help My rig is burning

Hi all,

I have 2 leadtek 7800GTX in SLI and overclocked to 490/1320 they used to run fine 65-70 for the top card and 50-60 for the lower card under load, until today when I started noticing artifacts while playing NFSMW I checked the tempreturs in the nView panal and was shocked to see that the top card is running at 99 and the lower card is still at 50. I checked the fan and it was running. I'm worried what the summer heat will do to my rig so I started to consider fitting a VF900 or a Danger Den to water cool them but will they fit as I have a single PCI slot between the two cards. However if you have any other suggestions I would really appreciate them.

Thank you in advance..

killer_uk: Which case do you have?
hmmm...aaaa....how can I say it? A Vento :D

Edit: The case is fitted with 4 high CFM fans I threw out the old ones. I have 6 main fans in the system and 6 X 40 mm ones

bigjonnyauk: i know its not the answer but why not get rid of those and get a top 7900gtx

im sure this would be far enough for your needs and cooler quieter
I've bought those two for 370 pounds each :( long long time ago. It was hard enough to get those two now its even harder for me to justify getting a 7900GTX. Also I've never used the bay in my life :p its a jungle out there....

The Zalman cooler is double width so it should fit with only a single PCI slot between them

What is your case cooling like? If you got them last year what temps were they running at in the summer?

I got them in September and they ran at the stated tempreture 65-70 for the primary and 50-60 for the secondary. during the winter it was even lower where the ambient tempreture is around 18-20.

Edit: These days the ambient tempreture is around 25-30.

I'm already water cooling my CPU with a single radiator with a 12cm fan.

By the way how much would the 2 cards get me. :D

Now the 7800GTX SLI gets me 10200 in 3DMARK05 and 7271 in 3DMARK06 with a pentium D830 @ 3.6GHz how much differance would I get with the 7900GTX... I think that the cpu cant keep up with the cards at this clock.

but still I think I need to save for conreo :D as I will need a set of new hardware with it.

The 7900GTX would be quite severly CPU limited with the P-D so I'd wait until Conroe

Those temps are fine for the previous year. It's possible that the heatsinks of the graphics cards have clogged up with dust. I'd suggest blowing compressed air through the vents to remove the dust - dust is a great insulator reducing the effectiveness of the heatsink

Are you sure the fan on the top card is running full speed? 99 degrees is insane

Is the fan/heatsink full of dust maybe? I would suggest a 3rd party cooler, but it looks like they already have decent ones. Is the heat off the cpu getting blown onto the top card maybe somehow? Is you PSU definitely up to the job, I could imagine a fan running slow if one of the card wasn't getting enough juice (although this would probably make your system unstable too). Definitely something wrong somewhere...

The fan is surely running but I dont know about the speed or the dust bit. i haven't checked it.
The CPU is water cooled "Gigabyte 3D galaxy" and temps would never hit 55 under continuous load and it has a fan above it.

Here is my spec:

Pentium D830 @ 3.6 GHz
2x 7800GTX 256MB @ 490/1320
Enermax Liberty 620W
2GB kit Crucial Ballstix DDR2 PC5300
Gigabyte GA-8N-SLI royal
2x WD 250GB SATA2 16MB
80GB maxtor Daimondmax 8MB
Gigabyte 3D Galaxy water cooling
HP DVDRW lightscribe + Plextor DVD rom
a Dozen fans and a fan controller all in A :p Vento :p

Even if it doesnt fix the problem get a new case :p

when I saw the Gigabyte 3D Aurora I thought about scrapping the vento but it was too late as I already fitted everything in it and I was too lazy to transfer every thing to a new case. but next time I will not rush things and buy stuff as soon as I see them. Learned it the hard way :D

I will fiddle with it in the morning and if it is still on the not so cool side  then I will get some shiny copper from zalman :D .

Thanks guys, I really appreaciate your help.
