I'm starting to get together parts to build a gaming PC for my son's 8th birthday. As you can imagine at that age, they don't really get what makes a good case. His requirement is simple... it has to be red, or have lots of red!

I have a budget of 2k total for the entire PC (including monitor), so don't want to splurge a massive amount on the case; £100 quid would be top end, unless something slightly higher was 100% worth it.

It's over 20 years since I last built a gaming PC, as I moved to gaming laptops and haven't looked back. I have zero idea what makes a good case these days (airflow and cable management top of my list, and a window would be nice). Looking at the sheer number of cases available now, I notice that some aren't suitable for larger graphics cards or coolers.

Would anyone be able to help find a decent case I can get now without the worry of what components I purchase in a couple of months? I've got my eye on this case, but not sure if the light colour can be changed to red?

I'm expecting that it will be a full AMD build with a 5700XT of some kind.

Thanks in advance for any help. The last time I did this you literally only hand a handful of cases and never had to worry about GPU or CPU cooler size, so it was nice and easy - mind-boggling now!

What about these 2 both have Red theme, the RGB lighting can be set to Red.

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £143.14 (includes shipping: £13.20)

Fractal Design Focus G Mini:

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £71.09 (includes shipping: £11.10)

Though I wonder if maybe a planer case with a load of RGB lighting might be a better investment? Then, if he decides he no longer likes red, or has a new favourite colour, changing things around takes seconds and costs nothing. Lian Li's PC-O11 Dynamic and Lancool II would be good for this, as would Phanteks' P400A. Or there's the Corsair 465x, which comes with three LL120 RGB fans included (which would set you back £20-£25 each normally). Kit any of those cases out with RGB fans and RGB lighting strips, and the moment you hit the power button he won't be complaining about a lack of red :p

I too like the idea of red RGB lighting, but also the Bitfenix Prodigy cases used to be available in all sorts of colours, including red. Maybe there's one still lurking in OCUK's warehouse?

Thanks for all the input, really appreciated. The Phantom PS400 is the one that I've now got my eye on.

How does that brand hold up to the bequiet range in general? The one I linked to in my first post comes with an additional fan, and I've since found out that you can change the colours to red, which would do the job for him.

Phanteks are one of the best.

Can't go wrong with either really. Both brands make great, well engineered cases. The main difference will be cooling; the 500DX is a bit better, owing to the mesh front panel. But the P400 is still very good.

On the other hand, the P400 is a lot more red :p That's either a good thing, or a bad thing depending on how committed you think he is to having a red case in the long run. At least with the 500DX,the lighting can be changed easily.

Thanks... I left the choice down to the kid between the phantek and be quiet. With videos of both, the Knight rider strips on the be quiet blew his mind.

Ordered it expecting quite a wait as it was out of stock. Arrived today out of nowhere. Can't beat that level of service during a pandemic

Appreciate all of the input.
