I would like to have an overclocked cpu but I don't know whether to buy it overclocked or do it my self, and is it worth it to over clock because i heard it can shorten the lifespan drastically and as i said before i want a lasting pc for at least 5 years and if its normal can it run games just as well or much less well? Also i want a really good i5 core and i am willing to pay up to £250 and is the higher number version better than the lower number version of the 4digit cores? Also could anyone list the differences between the 3rd gen intel i5 and the 2nd Gen intel i5? If there are any things you would change please tell me. Thanks!

do you have a sata optical drive to use on the build ?

do you have an o/s and is it 64 bit ?

is there a particular reason you've gone for that asus motherboard, if not go and have a look at the Gigabyte Z77M-D3H.

what graphics card are you planning to use and are you planning to put 2 of the in the system ?, if not lower the psu to a decent corsair 600/650w version.

go for overclocking yourself, plenty of people to help you on your way.

it will only damage the processor if you run to many volts through it/let it get to hot.

As above, overclocking is fine, and you should definitely give it a go :)
As long as you keep in sensible limits, no reason it should shorten the lifespan much, if at all.

Is this for gaming? If so 8GB of RAM is plenty. Also the 3570K is best for gaming, since the i7 3770K just has hyperthreading which makes little/no difference in games.

I'd also suggest an SSD for the OS/games.

I agree with mp260767 about the motherboard, and PSU. 850W is fine if you're planning to SLI high end graphics cards, but it really depends what you plan to buy.

My suggestion, depending on your answer the above questions:

YOUR BASKET
1 x Intel Core i5-3570K 3.40GHz (Ivybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor (77W) - Retail £173.99

Hi guys thanks for the replys. I think i will SLI in the near future, by the way i'm just wondering(noob:D) if you SLI graphics card can you use just one monitor? Also what is the difference between the motherboard i listed and the one you listed. Also the board i listed is a pro, is that any better or is it the same as beejjacobs, i like the motherboard he linked me too but i still have no idea, i need more information if possible.

I have a perfectly fine optical drive(not the best but fine), i have a good monitor 22" and FullHD and LED. I already have an os it is windows 7 ultimate 64. I just want the the 16GB ram :) so that is a defo and i might do some video redering and perhaps some video capturing using camstasia.

I'm gonna get the GTX 570 as a gift and i am wondering if i can SLI a GTX 570 and a GTX 580 and what is the difference between the GTX 580/570 OEM and the retail, they are both refurbs i think by OCs?

Ok so far i have come to this conclusion but feel free(please) to make some changes except for size of RAM. I don't want a SSD just yet, i will buy during christmas.

CPU Intel Core i5-3570K 3.4GHz Quad-Core Processor £173.94

Case Corsair 650D ATX Mid Tower Case £136.38

PSU XFX 850W XXX Edition Modular '80 Plus Silver' Power Supply £99.98

HDD Seagate Barracuda 2TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive £80.63

CPU Cooler: Akasa AK-CC4007EP01 Nero 3 CPU Cooler (Socket LGA775/1155/1156/1366/2011/AMD AM2/AM2+/AM3/FM1) £23.99
I don't know about a good cooler could some suggest me one and if the one i got from beejjacobs is good, im sure it is. Also as im going to overclock and probably SLI in the future, also my pc will be on for a long time probably as i will be watching a lot of movies during the week or just go on it, for this would i need much better fanning? Should i buy a liquid cooler and stuff, i want my pc to be constantly cool if possible.

Ram Kingston HyperX 16GB (4 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory £64.53

MOBO Asus P8Z77-V PRO ATX LGA1155 Motherboard £152.12
Don't know about the mother board yet, when i get more information i will change it or keep it but i think i will change to the Gigabyte TBH.

Total: £731.57
Thanks for the replys so far, i have found this forum very helpful.

If there are any changes once again just say and i will reconsider. Do i need a 850W PSU? I'm gonna SLI the GTX 570 and the GTX 580. Plus do you guys recommend i buy a cooler for the GPU as well as i might overclock that as well and i want everything to stay cool.

Right, that looks good :)

You need to SLI two of the same GPU, so two GTX570s. Only thing is the lack of VRAM on the GTX570s might be an issue. Yes you can run one screen with SLI, though its probably overkill!
You'll be able to overclock the GPUs on the stock coolers.

You might consider a 7850, depending on the budget. You can also get one with a good cooler for a decent price, that will allow nice overclocks.

[you may also want the 570 for CUDA support if you're using software that utilises it]

How to overclock a 7850 past 1050MHz?

The motherboard I linked is much cheaper, still has SLI support and USB3 etc... Gigabyte also have a 3 year warranty, with a UK RMA base. Hence the choice. Chances are you wont need the extra features of the Asus board. If you wanted to spend more this motherboard is still cheaper than the Asus, and has a free mouse mat (a GIANT one!)
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-389-GI&groupid=701&catid=5&subcat=2261

Is the optical drive SATA?

For editing, 16GB of RAM not a bad idea and its so cheap :)

Thats a good cooler for the price, and should allow an overclock of around 4.5Ghz or so.
If you have more to spend, some options:

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HS-021-AL&groupid=701&catid=57&subcat=1395
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HS-001-PT&groupid=701&catid=57&subcat=1395

The last is better/as good as a more expensive all-in-one watercooler, while remaining quieter too. So I'd stick with air cooling if it was me. If you want a watercooler, not a bad choice and gives you perhaps a tidier case.

Hope that helps.

I like the 2nd fan you linked because im going to get green cathodes(btw is sound reactive good?) and it will suite, sounding a bit gay :) yeah the optical drive is sata
I thought the motherboard i listed is the same as yours but just cheaper?
So updated version:
CPU: Intel Core i5-3570K 3.4GHz Quad-Core Processor £173.94

Case: Corsair 650D ATX Mid Tower Case £136.38

PSU: XFX 850W XXX Edition Modular '80 Plus Silver' Power Supply £99.98

HDD: Seagate Barracuda 2TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive £80.63

CPU Cooler: Alpenföhn Matterhorn Shamrock Edition CPU Cooler £49.99

RAM: Kingston HyperX 16GB (4 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory £64.53

MOBO: Gigabyte GA-Z77X-UD3H ATX LGA1155 Motherboard £119.98

Total: £718.42(£1.99 shipping)

Do i need 850W? I'm going to SLI two GTX 570s. If not i want to save money on that. BTW will 15" cold cathodes fit perfectly in the case?
Also what basically happens when i SLI do i double the vram?

Yeah, nice to have it matching. Sorry I'm not too clued up on the lighting side of things.

850W is good for 570 SLI:

Here is Guru3D's power supply recommendation:

GeForce GTX 570

On your average system the card requires you to have a 600 Watt power supply unit.
GeForce GTX 570 in 2-way SLI

A second card requires you to add another ~225 Watts. You need a 750+ Watt power supply unit if you use it in a high-end system (800+ to a KiloWatt is recommended if you plan on any overclocking).
http://www.guru3d.com/article/geforce-gtx-570-sli-review/13

You don't double the VRAM, which is partly the problem and why I suggested a 7850, as they use less power and have more VRAM. Not that the 570 is a bad card by any means, especially at £150!

I heard that the GTX 660 ti is coming out in July, i want a card that is capable to run borderlands, COD WAW Zombies and portal 2 then when that comes out i will upgrade to that. It is rumored to cost £150 which is very cheap and has 2gb. could you tell me a card which is not too expensive but can do what i need? This is because me and my friend are going to play maybe a lot of those games definetly borderlands. Or would you suggest that i just buy 2 7850 and crossfire them? BTW what is the difference between crossfire and SLI?

i'd be a bit wary of spending to much on card if your thinking of looking at the 660ti.

i'd have thought that the 7850/570 would be more than up to the job.

what screen size/resolution are you looking at gaming at ?

personally i'd look at getting the best single card you can, then maybe crossfiring/sli'ing at a later date.

crossfire/sli are basically the same thing, crossfire is ATI's way to link more than one of there graphics cards, sli is nvidia's way to link more than 1 card together.

Hi thanks, yeah i just want a card that can handle borderlands on high and saints row the third and portal two and COD WAW zombies as me and my friend are going to be playing lots of zombies and borderland by lots i mean maybe 8 hours a day.

I was thinking of buying GTX 570 and then SLI'ing them at a later date but people say the vram is not enough for some games. Because of this i am thinking of buying a GTX 660 TI when it comes out and SLI'ing them straight away but that will be after july and me and my friend are going to be playing a lot in june. If i'm going to buy GTX 660 ti then i want a card which i can run those games on but i will throw it away after or just not use it and so i don't want to spend too much money. Or should i just buy the GTX 570? But i will SLI them a bit later maybe next year?
Any help?

i think the 570 will do for what your currently looking to play.

i'd consider a look at the 7850, it balances speed and extra vram.

are there any particular games your looking to that are set to come out this year ?

**** what sort of screen size / resolution are you looking to game at ?

When i get my good graphics card i will play a lot of single player games such as max payne 3 2 1 borderlands 2, prototype 2 assassins creed 3 etc
by good i mean 660 ti or 570 if you recommend

will a 550 ti be sufficient for the first games i asked for because it cost £100 which is decent cost and when the 660 ti come out i will buy that

OK i have decided to go for the GTX 670. do you guys think its worth it? im willing to pay the £320 for it, also do you guys think i would have to SLI it because i dont think i would?

For a 1080p screen, a GtX670 will run anything and you couldn't need to SLI.

This one has 3yrs warranty and a good overclock:
