Help needed - computer keeps shutting down unexpectedly

Hello all,

I'm having an issue with the computer where it will shutdown randomly. It's never happened when I'm actually using it (i.e sat at the desk) however, I've left to cook dinner and come back to it being off. When I open the Event Viewer and look at system I can see an error with a message "The previous system shutdown at 21:52:34 on ‎22/‎06/‎2025 was unexpected" It's only started happening the last 2-3 weeks and I cannot for the life of me figure out why.. there has been no component changes from when I first built the PC (End of 2024)

I've checked the power management settings just to make sure it's not set to turn off after a certain time etc. When it does shut down, I can't just simply press the on button and it comes back on, I need to flick the power switch on the back of the computer and wait 2-3 mins before it'll fire back up. I have checked all connectors to the PSU/Motherboard etc.

Spec is as follows:

CPU - AMD Ryzen 7 9800x3D
GPU - RTX3070
PSU - Corsair RM1000e Fully Modular ATX Power Supply - ATX 3.1 & PCIe 5.1 Compliant - 105°C-Rated Capacitors - 80 PLUS Gold Efficiency - Modern Standby Support
Motherboard - Asus TUF Gaming X870 Plus
Plenty of cooling, has x8 fans and an AIO CPU Cooler

Thanks in advance for any help :)

sounds like something is tripping the overcurrent protection of the PSU (ie the psu is doing its job)
now the hard part is narrowing down what the problem component is, because it can literally be any component, unfortunately :/

Assuming OP is in the UK I wouldn't entirely rule out temps either, it's very unlikely but using some sort of monitoring software is worthwhile and relatively easy to do given the issues coincide with a heatwave.

Also try setting your RAM to stock over EXPO in the bios, heat could be messing with them and again it's an easy test.

Potentially the same with the PSU, Corsair changed the OEM of their RMe line-up when they launched the modern ATX 3.X variants and moved to a much lesser platform, and it was already their budget "gold/modular" line.

Thanks for the swift reply - what you have any suggestions on how I could check each one?
you cannot, without spare components unfortunately

however before jumping to the worst-case scenario, i would do exactly as @Gray2233 said, which is to BIOS reset everything to stock and also check the CPU/GPU temps in the first instance

It's just happened again, this time whilst I was using the computer. In event viewer the last action that happened was "Mtkwcx" - Scan abort. I've noticed this event a few times now, is this anything to be concered about? I've but the ram back to standard clock settings as well as the CPU. temps all seemed fine before it turned off though. I am UK based, as yes there has been a heatwave but it's only 18 degrees now, and I haven't been on the computer when it's been hot.

Try going into your bios and disabling Wifi.

It's a wireless driver, it sounds like your PC is scanning for networks for whatever reason and the driver is taking a poop, although I wouldn't expect a hard shutdown from that. It might indicate corruption due to the shutdowns but it's worth ticking off the list of potential issues.

We really need you to check your PC temps mate, download this:

Then take a screen or photo, upload it to https://imgur.com/upload

Link it here.

It might be driver related but it could be a problem that's starting due to temp problems and that's the easiest thing to immediately tick off on the checklist.

I'll restart and turn off the wifi, I've downloaded that and it shows this https://imgur.com/BC5tQQM

**Edit - I'm stupid, I can't turn off the wifi as I'm using wifi (Duh) I used to use an ethernet cable but where the computer is now I need to use wifi.**

yeah sounds like the wifi

i would try, in this order (if the issues still occur, then move down the list):
1) update wifi drivers
2) disabling wifi
3) physically removing the wifi card from the mobo

hopefully by the end of the list, the issues would have sorted itself out

The good news is the temps are good, the bad news is we've not found the problem!

You need to disable wifi via the bios.

I see, but then I would have no internet? I need the wifi to work. Or are we just doing this to find the issue and then I turn it back on?

That's how troubleshooting these issues often works.

It could be a software issue in which a driver update could help, or a bios issue in which a bios update would help, or a combination of both. It is rare these things happen but they're not improbable, so methodical testing helps narrow things down and then we aim for the solution.

Ok, I have turned the WiFi off via disabling the WiFi controller in the bios. It’s getting late here in the UK so it’s bed time for me, I’ll leave my computer on and report back in the morning… fingers crossed it’s still on! Thanks for your help so far

So no joy with the above, computer had turned off, i turned it back on and decided I would try to clean wipe the computer with a fresh windows install just to make sure it’s not software/virus causing it to shut down. As soon as the re install finished it shut down again.

Yes I think so too, I’ve been reading a few horror stories about the Corsair RM1000E PSU shutting down a lot, should’ve gone for the RMX
