Help needed Connecting 2 PCs via crossover cable

Sure it's been raised a thousand times but I'm a novice to networking, so apologies...

I've just acquired a second PC and have installed it next door - Having now bought a 15m UTP crossover cable I've physically connected them and indeed they 'seem' to be aware of one anothers' presence, but little else.

Local Area Connection Status: Limited or no connectivity. Speed 100.0 Mbps

Support tab initiated a Repair local Area Connection routine 'Windows is taking the following action: Renewing your IP address' but no dice - ends with 'Windows could not finish repairing the problem because the following action cannot be completed: Renewing your IP address'

both are running XP pro

The main aim in this exercise is to share an Internet connection - and no I can't afford wireless ;) It's all physical via a wired USB ADSL connection on my principle PC

Run the Internet Connection Sharing wizard on the PC with the internet connection. That should configure the missing IP addresses for the two network cards. Check firewalls!
 
check firewalls...... he speaks the truth! i have been trying to connect two pc's and my 360 wirelessly for the last year..... shared internet no problem bot none of the systems would reconise the other.... used to get board after an hour or so shouting at my pc and laptop! last night found a setting to open a port range on my laptop through norton.... checked my main systek (kepasky or however it's spelt) and found a simmilar setting and hey presto file sharing has begun.... so back to the point... check firewalls!
 
Right, blimey - this is sounding like it could suddenly get very complicated.

twiddling thumbs now while Network Setup Wizard configures host...
 
Hmmm halfway there I reckon.

Followed the wizard through to completion on the internet connected (principle) PC however there is no Networking Wizard icon visable in the control pannel of the Second PC.

2nd PC does however show it is connected to the principle PC's internet connection in the taskbar although FireFox will not even load the Mozilla homepage

Network places on Principle is not displaying the new PC. Should it?

Also will be wanting to share both hardrives neither which are showing up on their respective opposites

i'm out of my depth with the ''simple'' windows firewall... always found it best to turn it off and use a third party one... i presume you've done a restart.... next step is network set up wizzard.
 
Yes. Just noticed that the client PC is throwing up issues... I found (via a different route) the Networking Setup Wizard however it does not allow me to run it screaming this cavet: The wizard detected that this computer belongs to a domain ergo, you cannot use this wizard to setup a network.

New Connection Wizard worked however. Followed the Advanced stream... still no bloody good.

Stumped....
 
Network Connections on client PC indicate an internet gateway to the host (registered as connected Internet connection). Clicking on the icon shows status to be connected at 6.9 Mbps (same as the host, I'm now typing from)

And Internet Activity: Internet - Internet Gateway - My Computer

Bytes:
Sent (Internet Gateway) 1,404,55
Rcvd (Internet Gateway) 6,370,141

Sent (My Computer) 1,642,211
Rcvd (My Computer) 2,487,629

So things appear to be there as such but still cannot connect to internet via browser (IE or FFox) on client
 
Looking good so far then.

Open a command prompt on each PC. Click Start>Run the type in 'cmd' and press enter.

At the propmt type 'ipconfig /all' and then copy and paste that information from each PC into this thread.

Which firewall(s) is/are installed on the 2 PC's?

Yep, click the very top left hand corner of the DOS box. Looks like a little C:\ icon. Then choose 'Edit>Select All', then simply paste into your thread.
