I never understood why people exaggerate this point, because of financial situation for the past 3 years I've been driving on all 4 different tyres, I always get them 1 a piece used from the scrappy..

Yes the car might understeer a bit quicker, and might not brake as hard as in a perfect situation with matched and good tyres, but you can simply drive more calmly, ( as opposed to driving like a hooligan when the car is 100%), the cars I have have bigger issues ( which I don't have money for) than their tyres :o.

Until I'm rich, I'm not going to spend more than 2 tenners per tyre (tyre+ fitted + balanced) ( I do try to pick the best tyres from the bunch though, atm I do have 2 matched Conti's on the front, one Goodyear summer on the back, and 1 Dunlop winter on the back).

I mean cars function with space savers too ( and thus even worse mismatched with original tyres)... The ''skimp on tyres = child killer'' mentality is absurd... Not everybody can afford 60+ per tyre.

It's the difference between making a mistake in the wet and getting away with it, and making a mistake in the wet and ending up in a ditch. I know I can't drive and guarantee to never make a mistake, or never have to deal with someone else's mistakes.

Cheap, mismatched, worn, old or pre-used tyres are just adding a bit more risk to your driving, like not wearing a seatbelt, using a mobile, or having a couple too many beers. They are not a problem until they become one, and then you'll wish you'd spent a bit more on your tyres.

^ Yes, and cars without abs should be banned, we should all have chips in our cars tracking our driving style, we should have limiters for the speed limits :rolleyes:, more nannying rubbish ?

There are MOT norms, 1.6 mm of thread and no tears & no carcass visible, no radial/diagonal tyres mixing, and some other things... That's the norm, no need to sit down on a moral high horse looking down on people who have better things to spend on than tyres.

The consensus here seems to be completely different from what I'm used to, most of my mates are exactly the same and just want to pass the MOT as cheaply as possible and don't care about the rest. You can easily get used to having absolute rubbish grip in the wet and adjust accordingly very quickly.

Because you seem to be of an opinion that I should spend more on tyres and should use the bus, which I don't agree with.

I can afford to fit perfectly road legal ( which is all I care about, having a road legal car and getting from A to B) tyres on my car and don't need someone to tell me otherwise. Don't agree with it, then do something to change the requirements/laws in question instead of feeling elitist for burning up so much money on rubber and posting comments like that.

I think it's a huge waste of money for normal driving.

It depends on the car and your driving style IMO.

If you have a high performance car then it would be madness to have anything other than high quality tyres, but if you drive a 1.0 Micra and drive sensibly then I don't think its so important, but that being said a decent tyre for a Micra would be cheap anyway so maybe that is a bad example!
 
Do I suspect OP has not had the answer he was hoping for and we will never see him again?

Every one I've experienced has suggested part worns, part worn winter tyres or budgets. It becomes an inconvenience to get something like an F1 AS2 in.

I'd rather use a local place but I'll go to black circles again and get the local place to fit them who I've had an average experience with. Bad tracking which I didn't go back for, bad tracking which I did go back to get fixed and waiting over 2 hours for two tyres + tracking to be done. At least they fitted all the wheel nuts which is more than can be said for the place I took my dads car.

I use a local company with a few branches in local towns and they're as close to what you describe as I've found. Prices are maybe 5 quid a corner more than blackcircles but they're quick and efficient. They clean the rims before they fit them so they're not covered in grease, they fit the weights behind the spokes and they reccomend decent tyres.

I actually witnessed them send someone away - had a golf with different tyres on the front, one was illegal and the other was just above illegal. They had quoted him something like 80 quid for a pair of half decent tyres fitted, but he wanted them to just do the illegal one. They said "you'll have to go next door to kwik fit if you want something that dangerous" so he did..

Was sat getting mine fitted a while back and overheard a phone call they were having with someone looking for cheap tyres for an X5, 19" I think and they were balking at £60 per corner fitted. Madness some peoples priorities.
 
Buy cheap, buy twice.

I remember someone i knew talking to me about all the safety features of their new car and how it had a 5 star ncap rating etc. I then looked at what tyres he had fitted and they were miss matched budgets....

People are stupid.
 
There were some of these windforce things on the 2.5t mondeo when i got it :/

They are sooooo bad, on the way home in the wet i was playing with the cruise control and at 50mph in 5th the cruise was causing the TC to kick in!
(thought i'd broke it at first as the cruise kept turning off till i realised it's because the wheels started spinning)
Needless to say they were filed in the bin!
