i am looking to buy a new monitor within the next two weeks, so far i have narrowed my choice of monitor down to two;

1. Asus VG236HE 23" TRUE 120Hz 3D Widescreen LCD Monitor - Black with the nvidia 3d vision kit of course.

or..

2. Hazro HZ27WC 8-Bit 27" LED Widescreen Professional Monitor - Black

i am upgrading my monitor for the purpose of BF3 only.

the monitor i have chosen for 3d is an ideal size as i dont want to have to look great distances to see who is shooting at me so 23 inch is a good size for my gaming needs.
the down side to it is im not too sure on having to wear the glasses as it may become annoying and uncomfortable whilst weraing headphones but ive never had 3d so i cant comment on the comfort of the glasses.

so my question is, is it worth me buying a 3d monitor for BF3 only or shall i just add an extra £50 or so for the hazro? which is a little bigger than i would like for FPS games (not really a problem tho) but better screen res and a generally better monitor in my oppinion.

i am open to suggestions of other monitor options.

cheers

3D is a nice option to have and can make for enjoyable short bursts of 'alternative entertainment'. I would put this quite low on my list of priorities when chosing a monitor, though, as it is far from perfect in its current state. In short the main issues include; significant frame rate reduction (usually to under half the initial '2D' value), dimming of the screen, convergence/crosstalk issues, flickering and general inability to enjoy the experience for extended periods of time. Even after around 45 minutes of 3D entertainment I find myself wanting a break and my eyes go a bit funny and take a bit of time to recover. Everyone will experience slightly different effects and sensitivities to these issues differ. It also takes longer for you to focus on the target when shooting as the crosshair or reticule is in a different plain to the enemy solider - and you can't close one eye or your aim will be off due to alternate images being displayed in each eye. It's good for singleplayer fun but not multiplayer.

As far as 2D goes the ASUS will give you a smoother experience than the Hazro on multiplayer. Really it depends on your system and the settings you want to play at. I have played the game at 2560 x 1440 on an Apple Cinema Display and it looked stunning (this is essentially quite similar to a good Hazro but with worse pixel responsiveness). I was averaging around 40fps with everything on Ultra (except MSAA and HBAO) on a single overclocked Radeon 6950. I prefer an average of closer to 60fps on that game, though, and the more frequent polling of the mouse and superior pixel responses of a 120Hz TN panel does 'feel' very nice. But I wouldn't worry about the screen size of the Hazro being to large. If you are sitting a reasonable distance from the screen (say 40cm+) you will be able to see the entire screen no problems using the better part of your peripheral if not normal vision.

thank you for your quick responce PCM2.
3d is not a high priority for me it is just an option as i wanted to recreate my time from serving in the armed forces,(although you cant compare the 2 experiences) howerver an almost life like picture is a very high priority for me, my system is still in the planning stages but still have 2 to 3 weeks before i plan on ordering the system but i do plan on playing on ultra settings.

from what your saying it seems the hazro would be the better choice for me as the points you have made have slightly put me off playing 3d for this game especially the aiming and the fps side of things as i also prefer to be gaming at 60fps minimum, anything that produces less than 60fps is not worth me buying in my oppinion.
however the asus is a good size for my gaming needs as i am used to gaming with a 22 inch monitor and you say the asus is smoother than the hazro which is a bonus as i dont want no frame lag.
this might be a tougher choice than i expected lol

You can buy a "3D" monitor and not use it for 3D.

Just use it as a 120Hz monitor for higher frame rates if your system can produce them.

Think you would be off with the 27'', you get a lot more with those extra inches.

but are those exta inches is only going to show me the extra bird floating around in the distance or enhance what i would usually see on a 22/3 inch monitor?

sounds like a stupid question but im sure you have guessed monitors aren't my field of expertise lol

cheers
