Help needed flashing BIOS

I recently bought a Q6600 CPU after getting a lot of helpful advice on the CPU forum.

I need to update my BIOS before I install the CPU but I have a problem.
When I go into Q-Flash it asks me to select the drive to install from but only lists a floppy drive which I don't have and doesn't list my USB stick. I have had a look on the net and most people advise trying different USBs but I only have two, an old 512m and a new 8g.

Both USBs are formatted to FAT32 and the USB option is enabled in the BIOS.
The alternative is to get a floppy drive but this seems a bit of a waste as I only need it for this one process.

Has anyone had this problem before and know of a solution?

My current Specs are
Intel Core 2 DUO E6300 "LGA775 Allendale" 1.86GHz (1066FSB)
Gigabyte GA_965P_DS3 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard
Kingston HyperX 4GB (2x2GB) DDR2 6400C5 800MHz Dual Channel
Nvidia GTX460 768MB
Windows 7 64bit
 
Which USB slot are you sticking it into? The ones at the front are unreliable at best, you're better off with the ones at the back, particularly in the BIOS.
 
Your motherboard doesn't have USB 3.0 so unless you've put an expansion card in it will be USB 2.0.

Have you copied the BIOS file directly to the USB stick?

It shouldn't be in a folder.
 
The Bios file is the only thing on the stick, the problem is that I don't have the option of selecting the USB stick in Q-Flash.
 
Try it by starting the PC with the USB stick already inserted and try it by inserting the USB stick after you've gone into the BIOS.
 
I used to have the same motherboard and i used Gigabytes @BIOS software available on the gigabyte website to update the bios and it worked fine. You just run the software in windows and it updates over the internet but just make sure you don't reset the pc until the program has finished.

If above fails, try writing bios files to cd. You might then be offered option to write bios from cd.

Hopefully but not guaranteed. Worth a try for the sake of the price of a blank cd. Just remember to finalise the cd. Otherwise the cd drive may look empty to the bios.
 
As I've never done this before I'd like to do it a less risky way.

I don't want to ruin the PC and have to get a new main board and CPU just trying to get a slightly better performance.
