Hi,

I have just been filling out an application form for a job, finished uni recently and now qualified to do what I have always wanted - IT Technician.

Need some help if anyone can offer it, I need to "Supply additional information to why I am applying for this post".

I have put that I have always liked computers from an early age, done various courses and now qualified and ready to start career - need something else though, doesn't seem enough!

Any ideas?

Much appreciated!

Why you applying for a technician job if you went to uni? Surely its a bit of a waste of a degree since you could get that job after a-levels?

say that you enjoy working in a team of people, like challenges, also striding to learn new things and keeping upto date with current technologys.

Providing all that is true....
But don't lie, trust me, you will get found out.

I could have done, but its easier for me to get a job in this field and also allows me to possibly go into other areas too.

As he's said it's easier to get his foot in the door here, his degree will allow him to advance/use in combination with experience gained to move higher. Most other jobs require some sort of experience and hey, better than a lot of graduates who never plan to use their degrees :(

I must have applied for about 10 jobs so far, none of them are interested. Most want 3+ years exp. Its a pain, it will only be that one company that is willing to give me a chance and I will be unstoppable!! I'm going to look out for a lower, junior positions they will be more likely to give me a chance!

You'll struggle with no experience to get a "decent" IT job, but for a junior position you should be pretty strong..

Trouble is there are a lot of people applying for these types of jobs so you face lots of competition especially from people with a year or 2 of experience.. I've worked in IT networking for 6 years, my best advice would be to keep at it, and use the agencies, ring them up get on there case and get stuff sent across.. Be persistent, the more persistent you are the better..

My dad suggested using agencies too, as my brother did this when he first started out as a techie. He's now in Australia doing it :o . I think I will follow your advice, I haven't tried it yet. Where do I go to do this?

Just go down the high street and find an agency which cover IT roles and sign up :)

I use online agencies, pathway, netsource, bigred etc....

They usually have all the jobs and most of them operate on the job websites, www.workthing.com www.jobsearch.co.uk etc.. Although you might get a bit of a poor starting salary, your doing the best thing from starting as a all round teccie, too many think they can waltz in and get 50k. Believe me you may only get 15-18k a year to start with but you could double that in 2 years if you get your head down at somewhere reasonable..

Best of luck.

To be honest mate, I would be happy with that salary to start and especially as I'm not living on my own. Once I have a couple of years exp I will be happy. Thanks for the advice! :):)

Also, you might find it easier getting some short term contracts, big companies doing new pc installs etc, 6 - 8 weeks running around unboxing and setting up kit.... A little more money to be earnt, and a good way of building up real experience without having to have a perm job, usually a "start next week" mentality as well.
