I am brand new to networking in general so go easy.
So i decided that as i love to tinker to build a pfsense router and get rid of my Asus AC88U.
The reason for this is to use it for my nordvpn and and better security.
Im after an element of wireless for the household items to connect to and the children's iPads, Xbox, Nintendo switch, etc etc. Also have a 24port unmanaged switch and my hikvison DVR that uses 4 POE cameras.
BUT the main thing is my Xbox one x and PC :)
Now i only have a intel i5 3335s with 8gb of ram that has one ethernet port lying around thats no longer being used.

So what am i going to need to buy etc etc to get me going ?

Any help would be much appreciated.

There are quite a few on a popular bidding site. A lot go by OEM branding such as Dell and HP. Anything Intel 10/100/1000 is probably a safe bet to be honest.

2 port minimum gives you lan and wan.

If you have another internet connection or another physical network (or want a physical dmz) then yes you need a 4 port.

You can use more than 1 network card though if it works out cheaper (e.g. 2 single port, or 2 dual port)

And you are going to need a WiFi access point, e.g unifi uap-ac-lite to provide your WiFi needs unless you want to re-use the AC88U as an access point .

Im going to get rid of the asus all together so will have to get a Ubiquiti access point (still dont know which one yet)

Ok cool so if i got 2 of the dual port pro 1000pt intead of the 350i 4 port, it would essentially give me the same performance ?

when you set up your pfsense box only use the two ports on you new network card, any intel pro server card will be fine, plenty of those to be found on fleebay cheap for about £15-£25

its an Asrock H61M-VG3, when i have looked online it says :

- 1 x PCI Express 3.0 x16 slot (blue @ x16 mode)
- 1 x PCI Express 2.0 x1 slot

Does that mean that one wont work ?
