A client of mine has a 18gb outlook pst file and he wants to migrate to Office 365 or newer offline version.

Their office has 3 computers all using outlook and all connecting to the same mailbox. 2 of 3 PCs outlook opens fine but on 3rd pc the problem is there's an error that occurs when opening outlook. I can't remember what it is off top my head this evening but when googling it says to run scanpst.exe etc. I've done all that but still can't open it.

What is the best way to sort this out. Can I archive this pst and then create a new one. It's been so long since 2007 outlook I've forgotten how to support it.

The systems where it's working - export the file again on a working machine and try it again OR...

(The scanpst.exe might be in a different location)

A problem with outlook cannot be started. It’s showing the message “ReadFileEID Error”.

Step to fix this:

  • Open Mail in control panel and create a fake account to start outlook
  • Scan outlook file by exe or open scanpst.exe in located in C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office15\SCANPST.EXE
  • Browse .pst file that you want to scan and Start

  • After finished this scan, you will see the Found folders and items.
  • Then you can start to repair it by backup a file for the original file.
  • After repaired, you can switch back to this file repaired.

If it's the same mailbox as the other two pcs why are you caring? Just export to PST from another system.

Also, where is this mailbox held? In an Exchange server? You want to export from there, or at least be prepared to have one of the pcs grind to a complete hault for several hours

I have no idea to be honest. I work in IT which means mates and other people all come to me thinking I know how to do old things. I specialise in Epos and my old outlook skills have long gone. Doing this as a favour so I will start with moving pst from working pc to broken one.

The endgame is to migrate to Office 365 but with this 18gb archived so they can access it when needed.

Ok, depending on what O365 you're moving to, you shouldn't need to archive it, just export the PST (ideally from the Exchange email server) and dump it into their new email profile when O365 is setup
