my pc died last week, i fitted a new PSU and still dead, i replaced the mobo and still dead......... is it the CPU ???

when you switch on the PSU nothing lights up, no LEDs at all, the wall socket is fine.......replacing the drive makes no difference.

but the CPU looked undamaged !!!!!!!!!

i need an answer quick guys, thanks

Silly question, have you tried a differnt kettle lead? I presume you have as you changed the PSU. But a freind of mine recently sold most the components in his pc because it was playing up, it turned out to be the kettle lead...

I felt bad for him, but still lolled hard as you can imagine.

it's totally dead, i need to know because i need to buy a new CPU tonight.

it's like turning it on without it being plugged into the wall, i cant think of anything else that it could be, because everything else is new

and if the GPU was dead or the drive, the mobo would still have its lights on/ fans spinning......... new mobo, it must be a dead CPU

it's a new psu cable......wall plug is fine as well

Wouldn't you get lights on the mobo for a CPU error? Have you checked the fuse in the power lead? Have you checked the new PSU isn't DOA by plugging in some load (eg a fan) and seeing if it runs?

i havent tried the fans thing..........but the fans are still connected up, i dont think it's the new PSU..but if so it's 2 PSUs that are bust...

the rig is as dead as it was before i stripped it

on the web they say if the CPU is dead it wont start at all, but it could also be the RAM/ mobo, i will buy a new CPU now and check it more when i get home, because i can always get a refund on the CPU as long as i dont use it

mobo is new.......faulty RAM and it would probably still light up or even start

pull a stick, try it, pull another stick, but yeah, I would expect it to start.

I would expect it to start with a faulty cpu as well, as mine did...

It might well start with a faulty CPU, but mine looks dead and if it's dead the PC wont do anything, mobo?......... no it's a new mobo and if that was faulty you'd still get some power.

it's either 2 broken PSUs or a CPU, but these aren't cheap PSUs, my new one is a Seagate..i've just brought a new cpu so i'll try that, i wont De-lidd this one :eek:

thanks for your help, this is one hell of a lot of money

Things to try:

Different wall socket
Different kettle lead (done)
Paperclip test on PSU with nothing plugged in
Out of case build with nothing but mobo, CPU & RAM (short the on button jumpers or plug a switch in - your choice but try the reset button instead perhaps)
Build as above, minus RAM (won't boot but should beep if it's got a speaker)

ordered new CPU and mobo ( bent pins on new mobo) but wont be delivered until monday..

i've tried everything and the pc is still totally dead, both PSUs wont power anything on their own, not even the fans....but it does say on the PSUs that if there's a fault on the system it goes into automatic shutdown to prevent further damage, this makes fault finding a real sod

the original fault was :- the PC suddenly switched off in idle mode while i was watching tv, as if there was a power cut............my guess is the CPU has totally died and the PSUs wont work unless it's all working.

my guess is the original mobo is still working, but i cant test it without a cpu

I literally have never heard of a CPU just suddenly dying for no reason TBH. I guess you'll find out on Monday though.

Good luck man. I kinda hope it isn't the CPU though so you can sell on the new one and put your de-lidded one back in.

PS, my money is on PSU / DOA new PSU :P

i've kept the packaging for the new PSU just in case ;)

i still cant build rig as i had to RMA the new MOBO as well, bent pins....so i brought a new phanteks instead.

the thing is i've had the CPU for well over a year so if it blew totally, i would have thought that would have happened months ago !!

i might put the new CPU in the old mobo, because i think that still works and quickly test it without turning it on

You are sure there is power coming from the socket in the wall? :D Just saying.. I've had **** like that happen.

Have you tried old motherboard + CPU + new PSU and resetting BIOS?
Also holding down the power button for a few secs.

hi guys

it was the.....................................................CPU ;)

I fitted the new CPU to the old mobo and it started instantly.

This is the 1st CPU that's ever blown, but i did lap and delidd it, even so that was a year ago....also, i've never lost a mobo before either, so i've just wasted 300 quid on a new PSU and MOBO

but because it was totally and utterly dead it felt like a dead PSU...then a dead mobo ( because a blue flash and bang came from the lower mobo).............finally, no damage from CPU.
