no i didn't keep the boxes, too much mess in the house...plus it's only the CPU that's broken, i might get a spare CPU and lap and delidd it, not sure
but this CPU is going straight in and i'll just give it 4.4, just in case it blows again

I take it back thenGlad you got it sorted mate. Sucks that it cost you so much though. Better sell it all and get a haswell-E so you wont ever be tempted to delid again.
i would delidd again but i wouldn't use that new fancy silver liquid, because it's too runny and i noticed that it had leaked over the edges, only use a top quality thermal paste
no it leaked inside the lid, it spread out from the contact area to those line of pins that are close by........a much denser paste wont spread out.
i've also noticed that Liquid pro stuff...........on the carpet! and on the wall behind my workbench

i would personally just make sure that the CPU has a mild overclock and a standard high quality cooler, i'd get your performance from the GPU and MOBO only, otherwise you'll loose your RMA.
finally i think the 4790 is a far better than the 4770 anyway, it uses much less power and runs cooler

You didn't apply it like regular paste did you? It comes with a brush to spread it. When i applied it to my 4770k's die it was basically just like painting a very very thin layer of silver paint. No squishing or anything like that.

no i put it on thin, but when i removed the lid i saw fine droplets around the outside of the Die.............i also had these droplets on the 7970 GPU board as well.....plus on the Carpet/ my clothes etc.
i applied it exactly as instructed, but it could squirt out as the CPU gets hot, whatever the case its definitely no better temp wise than normal high quality compound. i noticed that it spits also if you let it drop onto the CPU from a height of only 1/2 an inch, or if you move the cotton bud too quickly, it's pretty foul stuff
i am surprised the CPU totally failed, because it was delidded at least a year ago and it never ran hot

Dont use liquid ultra/pro ever again. I'm actually at a loss for words. But it did make me laugh.

Delidding a CPU is it really worth it? I might have a go !! Can i use Arctic silver when pasting ?

Only delidd it if the temps are way too high and even then you're better off RMAing it
.........yes any really good paste will do. but your safest best bet is to lap the CPU so that it matches the cooler base perfectly, plus the cooler too.
my new CPU/ Megahalems are bog standard and the temps are the same as my old 4770, so there you go.
i would delidd again, but only on a cheap 2nd hand 4790, if there is such a thing !!!!

He shouldn't consider be de-lidding at all.
