help needed selecting external

I need an external drive for movies etc on laptop.

Whats the best choice for this 500gb minimum.

My maxtor onetouch4 just broke. Reading up on them it's fairly common so I'd avoid them for sure

After my onetouch 'broke' I took it apart and the HD was fine, it was the other bits that made it an external HD that had gone wrong. So, i've now just got it as a hard drive in my PC. Makes me wonder what the point of the external drive is? The only thing I can think of is if my PSU blew, it might now take the HDD with it, whereas before it had it's own spower supply

Or your on a laptop and need more storage space or to move that data from one location to another?

Yes, an external would be slightly less hastle for both of those tasks. I don't have a laptop or plan to move a lot of data though

Today I bought a Verbatim 500gb external drive for £45.

The price seemed good, I dunno what drive is in these, my mate is gonna take it away tonight to put some stuff on it for me. But it seems a good deal
