Help needed with a Los Angeles holiday

Please don't waste 6 nights in Los Angeles. You need a few at the most, California itself is amazing and there is far too much great stunning stuff to see to spend so long in los Angeles.

My mom lives in LA so we have to spend a decent amount of time there.

Skyscanner.net is good for finding flights. Hotels, take a look at Trivago

If you are going to go to Vegas, go in the week as the hotels are cheaper. Drive/Fly will take you about the same time when you take in to account the time spent in the airports for boarding etc.

As everyone has said, there is SO much literally within touching distance of LA it would be a shame not to go to Yosemite or Monterey/SF but if you are looking to spend time with your folks it may not be possible.

Hope this helps :)

We did the West coast for our honeymoon 3 years ago:

London to LA for 2 nights (Universal studio was main visit for us)
LA to Santa Barbara for 2 nights
Santa Barbara to Carmel/Monterrey for 3 nights
Carmel to San Fran for 3 nights
San Fran to Yosemite for 3 nights
then flight back to London.

We drove up the coast road for the entire trip which was marvellous, and San Fran is a fabulous city to end up in.
Yosemite was the real highlight of the trip - I urge you to consider that as there's so much to see there and the facilities were first rate. We were going to include a trip to Death Valley and down into Vegas, but we ran out of budget for that unfortunately.
If we were to do it again we'd consider staying for slightly longer in each location and definitely longer in Yosemite.

Oh, and LA Airport is the most god-awful place on earth - not a great way to start the holiday after such a long flight. Landing late in the evening it took forever to get a shuttle bus to the hire car place..then driving on the wrong side, at night, tired in an unfamiliar city was pretty tough.

San Fran airport was the complete opposite though - it's by far the nicest and most civilised airport I've visited. Even the hire-car drop-off was in a multi-story car park attached to the airport so no shuttle buses required. A relaxing way to end the trip.

I'd love to go to Yosemite! I don't think we'll be able to on this trip :( Maybe Death Valley might be an option - I'll have a look on Maps in a mo.

My mom has lived in LA on and off for nearly 15 years since I was a small child, and I've never considered going. Now a visit is on the cards I think I may have to go back! Stupid as it sounds I'd never considered how much there is to see and do over there

Ensure you do the South Rim of the Canyon rather than the west rim that is near Vegas which isn't really part of the grand canyon.

Thanks :) Our hotel is at the South Rim. We've chosen to drive there & have a mooch around the Canyon ourselves. I wasn't keen on being ushered around like sheeples with a load of other tourists.

Get an internal flight to Fresno Yosemite airport from LAX and hire a car, drive to the park, stay in one of the park hotels. You would be able to do that and back in two days.

/edit- South Rim is amazing. Bright Angel Lodge for lunch overlooking the Rim is a nice way to spend the afternoon. Go early to avoid the crowds, I would even consider driving in the middle of the night to get to see sunrise.

First full day there driving to the south rim and camping 3 nights next to the canyon, best way of getting sunrise and sunset pictures.

Thanks everyone for the replies. I think there are a few trips we can do to Yosemite when we're in San Fran so we'll maybe look in to that. Really looking forward to it :)
