Background:-

Basically i feel that its time to update my rather noisy system, i am confident enought to build a system, but i havent really kept my eye on the scene so dont really know which components are compatible with one another anymore.

At the minute i play world of warcraft and UT, i do a lot of downloading and disk writing etc, but all my files are kept on a 300Gb external hard drive, so i dont need to worry about actual storage space in the new spec.

My current system is as follows -

Jeantech Aqua Midi Atx Case
Intel 630 LGA775
ASROCK775VM800 Motherboard
XFX 7800XT 256Mb DDR3 AGP
2x 1Gb DDR400
Antec 500w power supply
2x 80Gb IDE Maxtor Hard Drives
1x LG DVD Rewriter (Crap)
20" Acer Monitor

I'm more than happy to keep the case and Monitor, but i feel that everything else needs to go.

I am running XP Pro at the minute and would prefer to stick with that if possible.

Obviously the idea is to keep the prices down as much as possible as i am on a £350 ish budget.

Oh and i should also say that the system needs to be as quiet as is possible, the current system sounds like the main runway at heathrow, and the wife is about at her wits end with the constant drone (especially as the system is in the lounge!)

Keep your PSU and you could do this:-

OCZ 2GB (2x1GB) PC2-6400C4 Dual Channel Platinum Revision 2 XTC Series DDR2 (OCZ2P800R22GK) (£34.06)

Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro CPU Cooler (Socket LGA775)
(£17.61)

Intel Core 2 Duo E2180 "LGA775 Conroe" 2.00GHz (800FSB) - Retail
(£58.74)

Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3R (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard
(£76.36)

OcUK ATI Radeon HD 3850 Pro 512MB GDDR3 TV-Out/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail
(£105.74)

Pioneer DVR-115DBK 20x DVD±RW IDE Dual Layer ReWriter (Black) - OEM
(£17.61)

Samsung SpinPoint S 250GB SATA-II 8MB Cache - OEM (HD250HJ)
(£42.29)

Total : £362.93

i'd go with most of melbourne's spec, maybe swap the pioneer for a pioneer or samsung sata drive.

have you been able to figure out if the noise is mostly coming from 1/2 components ?

Have you been able to figure out if the noise is mostly coming from 1/2 components ?

I think the noise is coming from a combination of all the cooling components and the power supply.

At the minute i have a 12cm fan in the front of the case which is taking air out, then 2 smaller fans on the side and back sending cool air into the case....both of the smaller fans are the amber asaka ones i think.

The CPU cooler is a xilence one which replaced a very noisy arctic freezer 7.

i'd go through the system and see what you can eliminate.

so unplug the fans and power up see if that alters the noise.

then remove power from the hard drives and power it up, see if that reduces the noise.

if you have the option reduce the fan speed on the cpu cooler.

fairly certain that mobo has onboard gfx so remove the gfx card and see if that helps reduce the noise.

To the guys who helped me with my new parts (especially Melbourne720)

Just wanted to report back and say that i went with the spec that you advised on and couldnt be happier....3 hours of building and installing and i was up and running, faster, cooler and quieter than ever.

Thank you and keep up the good work.:D
