My old pc from 1998 is about to die, it's components are all run down, plus I think I destroyed the floppy disk drive. However I need to keep some important documents, there is no way I can think of to transfer the files other than plugging the old HDD into my new(ish) computer. Is there any problem with doing this? Will the HDD format instantly? I don't know, however I would not like to plug it in and find out due to these files.

Thanks.

aslong as you keep your current hdd as the boot drive its fine it will be just sat there with all your data on

As long as the drive was formatted to a partition (ntfs fat32 etc) that your current OS can read, it will just see it as another drive. It will not instantly format your hard drive unless you specifically make it.
