Having a problem for the past week with booting up my system. Fans and lights all come on but thats about it. I noticed that the HDD didnt seem to be spinning up.

I swapped out the sata cable and it started up fine but after shutting down I had the same problem. I went through 5 sata cables somtimes with start up and sometimes not.

I even tried a different HDD but still had the same problem.

Both mobo and gfx card are less than a year old so I dont think its either of those. I'm at a loss at this point really, any ideas?

Cheers.

Then changing the SATA lead will have no effect. A faulty hard drive would not prevent your PC from at least POSTing through the BIOS, it would just come up with an invalid system disc message.

Obviously, what gfx card and motherboard do you have? I had a problem I've not had the chance to investigate before the weekend of no output signal from my 5850 after changing the cooler on it.

My system works fine with my old 4870, but the 5850 wasn't letting the system POST. Sure it's not the gfx card?

Does you motherboard have any LED's for displaying faults or anything?

what ram are you using? have you added more since this problem started? try booting up with just 1 stick in the first slot

System Specs:

ASUS P5KPL SE mobo
Q6600
2x1GB RAM DDR2
4890
WD 500 Gig

No LEDs to indicate problems. No change when I swap the RAM around.

I didn't make any changes or install any new hardware before I got the problem. Something else I noticed is that my system definitely sounds different when it doesn't boot, but all fans are spinning ok...

can you get past the post screen and hit F8, this should bring up a good few options, one of them wll be, boot from last known good config, hit that and see if it works.
