Hi guys im finally looking to upgrade my old mechanical hdds and was thinking of a ssd and hdd system. The ssd obviously for OS and programs and HDD for backup/music storage etc.

Current pc and hhd spec:-
AMD Phenom II X4 Quad Core 955 Black Edition 3.20GHz @ 3.80GHz
Asus Crosshair III Formula Motherboard
Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 6970 2048MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card
Quiet! Dark Power Pro 850W ATX2.2 Modular SLi Compliant Power Supply
Kingston HyperX Genesis Grey 12GB

HDDs:-
WDC WD2000JD-00GBB0 used mostly for storage, music files/video files and smartphone files etc
WDC WD4000AAKS-22YGA0 (split into 222GB 90% used - 149GB 50% used) used for OS and some file storage.
(stop laughing I know there old lol)

I was thinking something like the Samsung 500GB ssd but im not sure about what mechanical hdd to go for to accompany it for mostly storage but wouldn't mind the option to possibly use it for program installation for less frequently used stuff.

Doesn't realy matter to much which hard drive you get there all about the same in terms of speed only difference will be warranties

I was wondering about lifespan of ssds? Would it be more practical to go low space ssd and run programs from a mechanical drive? Or best to run a raid config with ssds? Ive no experience with raid and ssds :/ Or do ppl just run backups more frequently when they have ssds?

Put OS, apps and games on the SSD.

Always backup everything of importance on a regular basis.

Guys I was wondering about the IDE/ AHCI thing , ive read a bit of information about this and seems ssds run better with AHCI selected in bios. But Ill have a mechanical HDD running on the same SATA controlled group if I change to AHCI. Will this effect the HDD? I can move my blu ray drive to sata 5(if that's even required) which can be edited in bios to IDe or AHCI.

Can someone please confirm what the IDE/AHCI all means and what way I should connect everything up with
1 x SSD
1 x HDD
1 x Blu ray drive

Sata 1-4 can be edited in bios
Sata 5 can be edited in bios.

Marginally speaking, AHCI is better for your harddrives especially if they support NCQ.

Literally today I've ordered a Toshiba 2TB for about £55 (can't say, as it's a competitor). Along with that, a 256GB Samsung SSD. So I'm pretty much in the same boat as you. But for me, that order should satisfy my needs for many years.

you have to go ahci for your ssd, that will benefit hugely, the other hdd's less so but it wont harm or slow them down in anyway

Hey guys I need a little help before I take this to Ocuk customer services. I got my 2 new drives. Samsung 500Gb ssd and wd black caviar 2tb.

Now I've got the ssd installed and setup with os no problems. Problem is the 2tb wd, I can only see it in bios under boot priority order but can't see it at all in windows. Not under my computer or device disk management. I've tried a diff cable still no joy. I've bios setup for ahci but haven't adjusted any jumpers yet. There is a little plastic damage to drive when it arrived but looked cosmetic. Anything I've missed to try before I doa the drive?

Try taking any other drives off other then ur os drive eg.. dvd rom ect.. and see if that works.
Also which ports have u got it plugged in to.
As well go in to control panel / device manager and look at disk drives and see if it shows 2

Plus have u installed the amd chipset drivers
Sorry and another idea if u go to western digitals website u can get some bios/dos tools to check the drive but dont use the windows one if its not showing in windows

Yeah tried your 1st suggestion already unplugged blu ray drive and used that cable on wd 2tb bios and windows both didn't see it(old sata 2 cable) I'm using 2 new sata 3 cables I ordered with drives, mobo is only sata 2.
I was wondering ahci can be set for sata 1-4 or 5\6 individually. What if I kept ssd on the 1-4 and moved wd 2tb to number 5 and put it to ide in bios?

The amd chipset I'm 99% sure I have but ill double check when I'm home. Can't check anything till home after 5 but wanna build a list of things to try before home time

well ive tried everything I can think of guys :( But it looks like the drive was DOA.

Tried swapping power and data cable over
Tried a diff sata port
Tried taking drives off AHCI in bios
and at the end the drive isn't even visible now in bios, So I think the drive was on its last legs when I started but over time trying to get it to work its died :(

Its possible the physical damage to the plastic around the connectors isn't as cosmetic as I thought and maybe the drive took a bad knock somewhere.

But its not so bad its the storage drive for my harddrive setup so at least im up and running on windows :) Just have to sort an RMA in the morning.

Thanks every1 for your feedback in this thread and trying to help with problems :D
