Morning, so I woke up to this http://prntscr.com/e6sq6v I've never purchased any Win OS, Pbay ftw. Like this copy im running, Win 10 Pro came activated. But seems only for a year. I'm now being asked to enter a product key. Anyone know the best route for me to active my current copy I have installed without having to reinstall a fresh copy? I have looked on eby they are selling Windows 10 Pro Professional 64 bit Activation Product Key Code OEM. Not sure if thats what I need. Can anyone enlighten me please? Thanks ;)

I wouldn't by any OS key of f the bay, they are most likely MSDN keys and will become deactivated or dodgy keys that Microsoft will block at some point.

Did you upgrade from a previous OS like windows 7 or 8.1 to 10 or did you buy a key off the bay to activate windows 10?

If you upgraded from a previous OS you could try the OEM\retail key from that, if you brought a Windows 10 key off the bay its most likely become deactivated or something.

ED I didnt upgrade from Win 7. I went on pby and got a cracked win10 os that was preactivated. But the activation is for a year it seems. There was no OEM/retail key provided. So I'll need a working key now I assume. Got any ideas where to get one? Google isn't much help atm. Also how much is a ok price?

Well there you go, keys from the bay usually have limits such as limited activations, time limits, etc which really makes them not worth it. Buy a proper key instead.

Ok, so as I've never purchased an OS todate, are you saying any proper key will activate the version of win10 pro im running now? If yes how much are they on average?

I would go buy a OEM or retail version of Windows 10 and then wipe the HDD\SSD.

you never know what is going on in the background on a cracked version of windows when getting it from there as they can do anything to it without you knowing

.. As ED said, if you originally had windows7 installed and have either a COA sticker or can get the OEM license from the BIOS, then re-install 7 and get the 10 home upgrade under assistive option
My original Dell Win 7 came with that code. But I'm on my 2nd build now with two differen't mobo's. And have used cracked win7 and win10 todate. I have no access to that Dell as two friends and I shot it to pieces with pump action shotguns. Yes it was fun and we loved it... I just need confirmation if I buy a OEM product code will it work in the Win10 Pro I'm running now on my current PC? Or should I buy a full new licence and do a full reinstall?

You don't need a full licence to do a full reinstall, you can still do that with an OEM, which is probably your best bet. Make sure you buy the OEM from a reputable dealer, eg. here, not a cheap key site or fleabay.

Thanks everyone for the help. OEM it is.

OEM is for one PC only so once its installed it will be tied to the mobo of that PC.

Retail is designed to be moved from one PC to another but with only one activation at a time.

If you can spare the pennies get Retail as then if you upgrade your PC or get a whole new system (minus the OS) you can remove it from the old PC and install it on your new one.
