Help needed - Work related

If you've \ they've sent codes directly home of to a family member or used them to deliver items yo their own address then they deserve everything coming.

Stupid is as stupid does

Hi guys

I work for online clothes retail in customer services, so bascially I answer the calls where customers will have problems with orders etc. If a cusotmer ever complains we can send to their email address a coupon code for discount. We have 10% off, 25% off £40 off and £50 off. Quite a few members of staff have sent themselves coupon codes. The managers have found out and just suspended 4 girls. Out of the 50 staff we have I would say 50% of the staff have used the codes for personal use. We have all just been sent this email...........

To stop any gossip or whispers the below is an email regarding alleged fraudulent activity by some agents on the account regarding large discounts being applied to orders for themselves, friends or family.

If proven true, this is not only a betrayal of trust from an employee to employer point of view but it is a potential gross misconduct offence and fraud – which I am sure you are aware is illegal.

The alleged actions of a few employees has potentially jeopardised the future of the account, the reputation of our company as a global company and ultimately people’s criminal records.

At this stage investigations are on-going but we will be investigating every single person on the account and checking all activity over the last 6 months.

if we encounter further suspected fraudulent activity, we shall take the necessary actions on a case-by-case basis.

If anyone wants to discuss further confidentially, then please email me in the first instance.

What exactly can they do? Sack us? Can the police get involved?

Thanks

Oh my goodness, this is just golden.

I would resign so you dont have to lie about being sacked to your next employer.

If he is morally corrupt enough to steal, i don't think telling porkies to his next employer will ***** his conscience much dude. :)

edit: LOL at starring out the work p r i c k! Need a context filter.

OP, you don't say in your post whether you used the codes for personal gain or not although you do state 50% of the operatives have. Are you one of them ?

The company will probably avoid legal / court action due to the reputational risk to themselves for any future or existing business. The reality is the clothes company is still making a profit even with the discount codes applied.

Does your company have access to ALL the processed orders or is it just the complaints / problems ? If it's the later then you will be in the clear however if your company has come clean to the clothes retailer then your days are numbered.

The reality is you shouldn't steal regardless if everyone else is doing it

Without knowing specifically whether you committed fraud (although you have certainly implied that) and the amounts involved then it is difficult to assess what is likely to occur next. If you have slipped yourself £10 then the likely outcome is a slap on the wrist. £50 perhaps a formal warning. Higher then you get into instant dismissal and police involvement.

It isn't any different to taking money from a till or just helping yourself to stuff without paying (amazingly dumb). Sacking is the minimum that will happen. Whether the police are involved or not will depend on company policy.

If you are involved (large benefit of the doubt here) you need to accept now that your job is lost and try and do something that will keep your record clean. If you get a record for a crime committed against a former employer which you should be declaring on future applications then you will be unemployable. You will literally be picking cabbages for the rest of your life.

Say nothing.

The last 2 paragraphs are there to work on your conscience and have you (or other people) speak to the management and fess up.

If they have already suspended 4 people then they have been investigating already and caught them. It is highly doubtful that, even after further investigation, they will catch you.

The odds are in your favour just now. If you approach them and say you did it also then the ONLY thing they will do is suspend and ultimately sack you. There won't be any middle ground as the company will do nothing more to further jeopardise losing the account from the online retailer.

Is my answer the morally right one? No, but then you asked what would be best for you. Owning up won't help you find another job and protect your living standard e.g. mortgage and bills, saying nothing has a better chance that you will retain your job.

what I dont understad is, the 4 girls that got suspended, one of the girls got suspended cos they found a £30 order. the other girls racked up a few hundred. Later that days 8 people emailed our manager and owned up to making a few orders. They HAVNT been suspended! How is that fair?

The first four girls got caught, the other's owned up. Neither group can particularly claim to have been treated unfairly since they were all stealing.

But people have owned up to fraudulent activity and still allowed to work :/
It's not really any different to confessing to a crime before the police actually find the proof to convict regardless. They would definitely have found out so why keep hiding it?

Management are trying to make you **** your pants so you don't do it again.

They can't sack everyone that did it due to the cost and trouble of finding 25 new employees.

Don't do it again or find another job.

They should be extremely grateful. If I was one of the four who have been suspended I'd be apologising and grovelling to get my job back, not bitchin' about how unfair life is.
