Just put diesel into a petrol car, i asked my dad twice just to double check and he told me it was a diesel so of course i put diesel into the car, the car was starting to make funny noises so i turned around immediately towards my house but it then breaks down on the way home.

The car is not ours it is from the dealership as our car is in for a service, the car is a Skoda Fabia, i think it's a 1.4.

How much damage are we looking at to the engine? Is it a case of some might be lucky and some wont with there being extensive damage?

My Dad doesn't know what to do he is kind of panicking what is the first thing we should do in the morning?

Good news or bad news?

The good news is diesel in a petrol car is more easily fixable, usually just draining and flushing it through. If it were the other way around you'd be well and truely fubbbberd.

The bad news. Its still a very expensive bill.

Would u know off the top of your head what kind of figures we are talking about?

~£300 at a starting point for a drain and flush assuming nothing else has been damaged.

Is there a sticker that states it's a diesel on the filler cap? I'd argue the crap out of it that you weren't told and it wasn't stated.

(You should have known tbh!)

Theres usually a giant ass sticker on the back of the fuel flap...

Ye i know i should have known, but my dad is the one that rented the car told me it was a diesel multiple times so i took his word for it. I'm not very experienced with cars as i have only ever driven one car since i'm driving for the last 7 or so months.

Normally when they are a diesel it does.

When a engine goes CHUGGA-CHUG-CHUG along with no revs and the smell of diesel, most likely a badge on the back too. It tends to be a diesel. If none of these are apparent, it tends to be a petrol :p

Luca, good luck! Hope it just needs a flush.

My Petrol Smart ForFour 1.1 had petrol light on, I filled up with a gallon of diesel (I was told it was petrol and never checked). Drove about 30 miles, sluggish as hell, went to a garage and filled up with petrol. Drove it for a couple more days after that, seemed alright. Gave the car to my sister and she hasn't said there's any issues with it.
I hope you're just as lucky with no lasting damage/cheap to resolve :p

get it out with a pipe and some vacuum ( suck if u have to) , if you can get to it, fill with correct fuel drive it round should sort it self out.

How much diesel did you put in, exactly...

Its important. If its a small amount (couple of litres), you could probably just brim it with petrol, and drive it away with no real issues.

However, if it is a load, you should just need to drain the tank, fill with petrol with a turn it over to get rid of all the diesel. I think people say you should replace the fuel filter also afterwards, but I would suggest on a rental, its not an issue :p

You guys are forgetting something :

"The car is not ours it is from the dealership as our car is in for a service, the car is a Skoda Fabia, i think it's a 1.4."

They're gonna want to stick a new engine in it and bill you !
