ok a friend of mine's router suddenly started playing up the other day, i got a phone call saying the internet suddenly stopped working! so i went round and it all appeared to be fine (router giving full signal strength and saying it's connected) however it still wouldn't connect to the internet! i've tried the following but still to no avail (i have found the problem which is that the laptop isn't assigning a ip address) :
-rebooting the router
-winsock xp fix
-manually assigning the laptop a ip
-connecting via ethernet cable
-tested the net connection using a old bt voyager105 usb modem and this connected first time

anyone any further suggestions before i replace the router?

has he got norton or mcaffe or a firewall ? try turning those off if he has.

Also have you checked that when you assisnged a ip in tcp/ ip u also made sure dns was set to auto ?

tried the hard reset to no avail, there is nowhere in the NETGEAR options that allows you to change the DNS settings it's just set to ON all the time? the strange thing is that it was fine for about a month then fine one morning and early afternoon it just went down? could the router be faulty?

It defiantly could, but you really need to try everything before you RMA(return) it. You could always ring Netgear to confirm that it is the router.
