Ok so i have one pc and one laptop. I have a cable wireless router which is connected to the pc via ethernet and to the laptop via wifi - internet is working fine on both. i also have a printer connected via usb to the pc.

what i want to do is set up a network so the laptop can access the pc drives and share the printer but to be honest i dont know where to start - can anyone tell me how to do this?

First of all go to the network icons in the task tray, right click on status and then click on properties and set up "Microsoft file and printer sharing" (or if it's there you should be OK).

You will also need the same account (e.g Joe Bloggs) on each computer.

Go to my computer for each computer and make sure they are both in the same "Workgroup".

You will need to install the printer driver for the printer on the PC on the laptop by "add printer".

no you dont....

you can use any account you like

Beat me to it. If you are on Win xp, run the "network setup wizard" on both pc and laptop making sure you check the "enable file and print sharing", the topology diagram you choose would be, "this computer connects to the internet through a residual gateway". They will all be given a default workgroup name, MSHOME.

You should then be able to access the others' shares through my nework places, or you can use UNC paths such as \\path\share name or you can also use ips instead of the UNC path...etc etc from explorer or start/run.

As for sharing the printer, i assume the drivers are installed on the pc that it is directlt atttched too, if so fine, you don't even need to install them on the other(remote printing)

You need to go to the printer properties though and click sharing and give the shared printer a share name.....

You then need to add the printer to the other pc or laptop that is not directly attached.
