Hi - hoping someone can help please.

I put together the build in my sig on Thursday. It was running fine for 3 days but last night it just switched off while playing BFV. Now, it won't boot into Windows as it just blue screens.

I seem to get a different stop code every time, any of (plus others):
ATTEMPTED_EXECUTE_OF_NOEXECUTE_MEMORY
DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED
INTERRUPT_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED
PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA
SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED

I can't seem to get it into Safe Mode. I thought I'd try and re-install windows so I've tried booting from my Windows 10 USB stick but that just bluescreens too.

Any advice???

Remove all but one stick of RAM.
Remove GPU
Remove all but OS drive
Remove any non-essential devices and peripherals.

If the problem is gone, there’s your starting point.

Thanks WantoN - finally got back this evening to do some troubleshooting.
  • Tried both sticks of RAM one at a time (tried different slots too) - no change.
  • Removed GPU (plugged monitor into onboard graphics) and all peripherals except a keyboard and all drives except OS drive - no change.
  • Removed the OS drive (nvme) and replaced with an SSD which I installed a fresh copy of windows on the other day (for another PC)
None of these worked. Even with only the new SSD from another PC, trying to boot into Windows, got same error (system thread exception) and again tried booting from USB stick (legacy and UEFI options) with the new minimal hardware connected and still getting BSOD. So as I see it that leaves:
  • PSU
  • Mobo
  • CPU
PSU seems issue seems unlikely (?), it's 2 months old, was using it in my last PC before I started my new build last week, would be a bit coincidental for that to give up 3 days after replacing all other components. It feels like this must be a mobo or CPU issue. How can I troubleshoot further to determine which of these is causing the issue?

No worries mate, it’s frustrating and upsetting when a new build doesn’t work.

It’s good we’ve ruled out some issues. PSUs can cause odd problems, so if you can try a different one easily, then I’d do so.

Just to confirm you’ve tried a fresh install with just the OS drive installed (and a different drive at that), and you have no other PCI-E cards, wireless adapters etc installed?

Have you tried fresh / updated drivers for everything? Chipset, audio, Bluetooth, networking, etc.

Can you try a different keyboard and mouse? I really don’t think that’s it, but hey ho.

In the hardware monitor, are there any devices with issues?

Tried using DDU to clear out any GPU drivers?

My gut feeling is to agree with you and say CPU or Mobo.

That's correct. I have access to a 300W PSU which I can try if I take out the GPU. In terms of drivers, I had updated the mobo chipset, audio and wireless drivers (but not Bluetooth), the BIOS, and installed GPU drivers the day I built the PC. However now that I can't boot into Windows, even with a fresh install on a different drive, I obviously can't do anything at all now! Simply can't get into windows. F8/Shift+F8 doesn't seem to do anything - I just end up with the same bsod.

Already tried a different keyboard and mouse. Not sure which Hardware Monitor you mean - in the BIOS? There's nothing flagging up, it's detecting the CPU/RAM/Storage all fine. The only BIOS setting I changed when I built the PC was to turn XMP on (which I've now switched off).

Currently creating a Ubuntu bootable USB to see if that works as I can't even load the Windows 10 bootable USB...

I’ve had corrupt Windows USBs (straight from Microsoft!) so try to download one off their site and boot off that too.

Yep, just to confirm, I created the W10 bootable USB myself using the Microsoft download tool. And I've used it for another PC which is fine.

So I've created a bootable Ubuntu USB and tried booting from that and I'm getting the following. I can't understand if this is an issue with me creating the bootable drive incorrectly, or if it's telling me I have a hardware problem: LINK

UPDATE: I tried booting using UEFI and get a different error: LINK

Further update - I found a bootable version of Intel's CPU diagnostic tool - it found no errors but reported my CPU running at 4.9GHz. I then checked BIOS which clearly states running at 3.7GHz. I tried disabling EIST and Turbo Boost in the BIOS and after doing this, for the first time, I got as far as the windows login screen before it threw a BSOD. However, I now can't get that far again, even with those options disabled. It's gone back to how it was before which is pretty much instant BSOD.

I've also noticed issues with turning the PC off and on again now. Sometimes when I switch when I push the Restart button or if I switch it off and then on, everything spins up but I see nothing on the screen and the keyboard isn't active. I then have to power off and on again before I see the MSI splash screen.

Have you tried resetting the CMOS to defaults? I'm wondering if there's some weird overclock that's been set.

Just a thought, but maybe something has got stuck underneath the motherboard and is causing a short. Perhaps an insect has died. So can you try taking the motherboard out of the case and giving it a good looking over? Then test it outside the case.

Resumed testing this evening. Tried resetting CMOS and also a different PSU - no change.

I mentioned above problems with restarting the PC. It now only turns on properly about 1 in 5 attempts. The other 4 times I get nothing on the HDMI output, sometimes pushing Restart button resolves it, sometimes pushing the button I here it restart but doesn't resolve it. Sometimes pushing the button does nothing at all.

Everything spins up every time - all fans/lights etc but struggling now to get to MSI splash screen. Incidentally I noticed last night while swapping things around that SATA ports 4&5 don't seem to be working - only ports 0-3 show the HDDs as registering in BIOS, the other two show not connected. I'm starting to think it must be the mobo - do the issues I'm describing with the PC not posting properly indicate a mobo issue?

EDIT: I now can't get anything out of it at all - no peripherals connected except a HDMI lead.

Returning motherboard as faulty. Have ordered Aorus Pro WiFi as a replacement. Really hope this fixes it.

Aaagh! Unfortunately this isn't over.

Received the Aorus today, but when I switched it on, it stays on for 10secs and then restarts. I noticed this mob has status LEDs (unlike the last one) and the VGA light is static red. So I removed the graphics card and have plugged a screen directly into the HDMI port on the motherboard, but same problem. The DRAM light stays on red for around 2 seconds and then it rests on the VGA light for around 10secs before the system reboots. No output on monitor.

Help appreciated please, could it be the CPU?
P.S. I'm using the 8 pin CPU power connector - I understand I don't need to plug anything into the leftmost 4pin connector?

have you tried your other PSU now you have replaced the mobo?
That's exactly what I was just doing actually.
Exact same behaviour. Bear in mind my spare PSU is only 300W but I assume that's plenty without a GPU or any drives connected.

Yes, although I guess it's possible that BOTH ram sticks are faulty?

I'd sort of hoped that the CPU light on the mobo might stay red which would be a big fat indicator of what's wrong.

I've tried booting without any RAM in at all, and the red lights flash between CPU and DRAM alternately before restarting.
Another thing to note, occasionally the colorful Aorus lights turn on, but not every time.
