Hi All,

My old computer just stopped working the other day, which was a good excuse to get a brand new build. However, ive got serious problems as it wont start up properly - when i hit the on switch everything starts powering up, but it just turns off and auto resets.

Weird thing is, absolutely everything in the PC is brand new!

Ive disconnected the reset cable in case i had it wired incorrectly and have just plugged monitor straight into onboard graphics out.

Heres the build

Core i5 2500k
Corsair Vengeance 8gb
Corsair 650W TX v2
Crucial M4 SSD
MSI z68 - gd65

Any help would be massively appreciated!

unfortunately not - just powers up, all LED's come on, fans spin then resets. after couple of seconds the same happens again, but it just keeps going in a loop.

PSU is brand new and have disconnected the reset button - getting v worried!

Maybe a silly question, but have you connected the 8 pin power lead from psu to mobo, and also check that all cables are installed correctly and making good contact. Have you tried a Graphics card instead of on board?
Could also try re seating cpu - just in case. Check memory is installed ok and in the right slots. Try just one stick of memory in the first slot nearest the cpu.

thank you all - it was the memory - MB had the slots mis-numbered so i didnt have any in primary slot!!

have a good weekend (you sure as hell made mine better!)

aargh - after a couple of restarts its doing the same thing again!!

potential faulty memory? this is driving me slightly insane

I had a similar problem with my brand new gear, I had to RMA the motherboard. However, it could well be an issue with my CPU, but I guess i'll find out soon enough.

Take the CPU out of its socket. Turn it upside down and take a look at the pins. Make sure they aren't bent.

Think you'll find the pins are on the mobo - but still a good idea to check for bent pins as they are quite fragile and easily bent if you are not careful. To the op - suggest you have a look.

Have you tried different mem sticks in the one socket - to find out if one stick is faulty?

The Pins are actually on the socket but yes check you havent bent any.
You may need a magnifying glass, i nearly went boss eyed checking all mine lol

thanks all - will have a look.

really strange that it started to work when i put the mem in the correct slots then decided to stop all of a sudden.

not sure it could be the CPU pins as i havent done anything with it since it was working. thinking its def a motherboard or memory problem!

unfortunately not - old PC is core 2 duo so memory doesnt fit, PSU doesnt have 8 pin mobo connector and cant try mobo switching.

probably going to have to RMA. should i return both the Mobo & Memory at the same time or one by one (wondering what etailers policy towards this sort of stuff is) btw. it was through a competitor, not overclockers unfortunately.

tried 1 stick at a time in every memory slot and still no joy. think i'm going to RMA the memory, CPU and mobo at the same time. that wise, or should it be done 1 by 1?

If you've tried both memory sticks on their own and still get the problem then I'd rule out the memory for now. I'd also rule out the CPU as they either work or they don't. My bets are on the motherboard (most likely) or the PSU. Could also be something shorting out due to incorrect mounting of the motherboard. I'd be tempted to take the board out of the case and try it again. Note: Just because the stuff is brand new, doesn't mean it's unlikely to be faulty.

Trying outside of the case is the last best hope as suggested above - if still nothing then time to RMA the board I would suggest. You could try removing the cmos battery for about 20 mins and then try outside of the case - once you have replaced the cmos battery of course - with just one stick of ram and graphics card or onboard graphics(whichever) and see if that brings it back to life.
