Hi, I am a begining computer builder and i just don't get how some cooling works i've checked google and it's telling me two different things.

First of all the CPU: Does the fan suck hot air away from the CPU or.. does it blow cold air onto it?

Secondly graphics cards: Does the fan suck hot air away from the CPU or.. does it blow cold air onto it?

Thirdly i have this, [Radeon 9600 Pro, 128mb DDR with DVI TV, C3D 6036] and i need to cool it, do you know any thing cheap that will do the job.

(Sorry for bad pic) Thanks Mark.

For your first two questions there isn't a correct answer as they can work in either way. It is however more common to have the fan blowing onto/through the heatsink.

As to your third question... what happened to the cooler the card was originally fitted with? I would guess that any third party option would cost more than the card is worth.

GPU cooling take a more customised form than just 'blow onto' or 'pull air away from' approach.

Quite often the fan will suck air in to a heatsink, and the air is the piped internally over the heatsink fins to cool the heatsink and therefore the chip.

As mentioned above, it would be probably more expensive to buy a cooler for that card, than to replace it with something similar (ATI X300 256MB PCI-Express cost me a fiver second hand, and that was over 12 months ago!).

Cannot change picture but it's better if you right click it and click 'view image'.

I got the card for free, it'll only cost me £3 or something to get a fan and heatsink?

It's going into an old dell dimension 8200, that has AGP or PCI slot, the cooler space is 4.5cm long so i'd need a 45mm fan and sink?

cheers

If you do a search for '9600 Pro' on Google images you'll find plenty of examples of what the original cooler looked like; in modern terms it was minuscule.

The nearest thing I can think of is a motherboard chipset cooler. OcUK sell a Akasa AK-210 chipset cooler for £3.44 which with a bit of ingenuity could probably be pressed into service if you can stand to lose the use of the next expansion slot.

OcUK also sell an 'Arctic Cooling Accelero S2 VGA Cooler' for £11.49 which according to the description should fit.

Personally I wouldn’t bother trying to fix it as you can pick up better cards on a certain well known auction site for well under £20.

I've been looking in a few places and this came up;

Cheap and looking at the Fan speed and air flow it's more than most, or is it crap lol.

Mark :)
Hope everyone had a good x-mas

Ummmm, are they any good? Worth me buying one.
I'm trying to get a fan / heatsink for the card, probuably the chipset cooler one unless theres a better one for no a lot more pref under £5?

I don't know how good things are and if they're worth buying.
