Hey guys, after many tears about how much my car insurance is looking to be this year I have decided that a bike is going to be a good option. I've wanted a bike for years but haven't had the money to be able to buy one.

So I'm looking for my first 125cc bike and have about £1500 to spend on it. I do like the look of sports bikes but I have quite a bad back so I'm feeling a 'cruiser' style might be a better option? I was looking at a Yamaha XVS125 and love the looks of it but thought it'd be best to ask you guys for a better opinion

Hello mate & Welcome to the Bikers section.
I'm pretty noob myself & have only just sold my 1T & got a big bike but I'll give my opinion anyway.
The Modern 1T's are all pretty much the same for perfomance & fuel ecomony insurance prices etc They are 4 stroke so Ultra reliable & great on fuel.
As you've pointed out the XVS I'd say How tall are you as they are quite small. (I'm 6ft5 though so everything was small ;)) Go & view one & sit on it for size as it's the only way you'll know.
Personally if I was to get a 1T again it would be a Varadaro, Honda reliability & a real good size bike for a 1T.

I did have 2 1T's a Chinese Chopper an AJS EOS 125 & an old NS125R 2 stroke. The chopper looked great but was to slow, Never missed a beat the 13 months I had it & thrashed it though. The Honda was superb a 2 stroke that did over a ton but I had to rebuild the engine myself 3 times to get it mint & when I did some Dude pulled out on me & I went over the bonnet & off to Hospital. :D

Anything else you want to know then just ask as I can talk about bikes all day long at the mo. :p

for your first bike id consider the tall trail bikes, they have good turning circle and are light, however they are the thieves favourite

go for fourstroke they will last longer,

ive used a kmx 125 and they are good, parts are cheap, yamaha dt or the fourstroke equivalent would be a good choice, dont know much about the cruisers

Sport bikes:

Cagiva Mito / Aprilia RS125, 2 strokes, bit more un reliable (if you look after it it will be fine), faster, sounds awesome IMO and can be found relatively cheap

Honda CBR 125 / Yamaha R125, 4 strokes, pretty much bulletproof, a little bit slower and sound like an old lawn mower, the yamaha is a little expensive and im not sure about the honda

+1 I currently have a Mito and its so much fun, never let me down only when it was due new rings which was an easy fix (commute daily with it too)

and before that i had an aprilia rs50, again same story an amazing bike to start on with no problems

As soon as an italian bike is mentioned you have moan . Maybe you just buy dogs but i have had loads of Italian and jap bikes (and british) and there no worse than anything else as long as u buy the right one

i wouldnt have one for free, anyway rant over,i can see your italian fanboys and fair weather riders

Im sure you would .. Im not a fanboy .. i have owned most makes and models .. Atm the Aprilia does everyting i want better than anything else on the market atm .

Fair weather riders ? dunno where u get yer info from .

Btw i dont see any mention of what you ride .. Or yer bike history

Cheers for the help guys, I think I'm just gonna have a look around when I'm back from Uni and try out as many as I can, I'm 6ft2 so I have a feeling that might limit me on some bikes. Hopefully gonna have one before the summer leaves again!

Well, I'm 6ft 1"... and I rode 800+ miles on my sons CBR125 56 Plate... and I was perfectly fine and I do suffer with a bad back and neck due to my sitting on my arse job! :-) However couldn't sing the CBR praises enough, superb, started first time everytime, handled well, did 80 down hill, 75 flat out on the flat... brill.
