Help on overclocking my 8800GTS

What OS are you using?

If you're using XP then download ATi Tool, you can bump the speeds up with this then use the 3D View for scanning for artifacts :).

For Vista then you're going to need Riviatuner unless ATi Tool works now.

Ive never overclocked a graphics card before, so whats the process. I dont want to experiment incase i break it.
use rivatuner, set the core and mem up by 10MHz, run 3D mark 06 to stress the card, if it causes artifacts, take it down 1MHz at a time until you can get through 3D mark smoothly. if its stable after the 10MHz increas, repeat this process until you find the highest speed that doesnt artifact

Thanks, ill try it tonight and get back with results. Im on XP by the way.

What sort of speeds are people with similar cards getting ?

I've just picked up a 8800 gts 640mb and running @ 600/1000 so far had core up to 662 until artifacts appeared in ati tool :)

Run Rivatuner and see what speed your fan is at, if not full speed set to 100% and try more OC.

BTW on 8000 cards use top set of controls for FAN, the bottom set with FAN settings dont work.

In Rivatuner, what revision does it say your card is?

ie) 320-bit G80 (A3,96sp)

The A3 indicates a revision 3 card which have been reported to OC to 700+ Mhz on the core, on air.

Mine got to 717 before locking up ATiTool. I run it at 650 for daily use.

700+ is insane :D

I can use my 8800GTS at 650/2.2ghz, but I run it at 640/2Ghz, in ATi tools 680/2.2Ghz seemed to be artifact free.

Aye, I was quite surprised the first time I ran 'find max core' in ATiTool and it went past 700.

My memory only goes to about 2000 before artifacting; I run it at 950 for daily use.

TBH, I don't see much improvement in my 3d06 or aquamark scores once I OC past 600/900. I think my X2 4600+ becomes the bottleneck at that point.

I'm stuck at 103000. I think aquamark is known for being a heavily cpu limted benchmark, so I pretty sure thats what it is in my case.

Yea probs is, with my 3700+ @ 2.8Ghz and 8800GTS at 650/2.2Ghz I only got 100,00 max when tweaking the old crapp 1GB generic value rubbish ram.

Mine finally threw up artifacts at 714 core , oh well still a good `un ! :D

I bet the 8800GTS's at 700core have amazingly lightning fast godly magical perfect performance in games compared to those at 600 :p

Ohhh ohhh just noticed something here, my revision is A3,96SP :D

Ran for 15 mins on ati tools scan for artifacts mode with the core at 620 and memory at 950 and the temp didnt go over 72 is that safe for this card ?

Yea thats safe.

With my card at 650/2Ghz my temp idle is around 55 degrees and load is around 70 degrees.

Right core is a 620 and memory is at 1000.

Idle Temp: 53
Load Temp: 72

Think ive found a nice clock there ! whats a dangerous temp then ?
