Currently using an i5 750 alongside an xfx 7950. I have had the 750 for a good few years now and am off to uni in September. I was thinking of upgrading before I went to uni whilst I had the money just in case anything did happen whilst I was at uni and couldn't afford to upgrade there and then. I did previously look at OC but now am wondering if just buying a new cpu will be better. Don't really want to spend more than about 350/400£ but more money is there if needed. I use my PC mainly for gaming and mainly for playing CSGO.

Any helps much appreciated cheers.

broadwell is due out soon, suppose that would be the best option due to it being the latest

if your on a tight budget then a used 2600k/2700k/3770k cpu and a z77 board would be a good choice, good few years life left in them imo

Yeah I looked at a 2700K and there is one for sale on ebay now at 150£ but other than that one not been able to find many but I only had a brief search. Cheers for the advice.

you'll get some decent money for your p55 board as they are becoming rare now

but a z68/z77 is a better platform, true sata3 speeds pcie3 on z77,and sandybridge cpu's clock well and run much cooler

I have an old gpu, psu and case so I think I will just buy some extra ram and have second pc at my house which can last untill it dies then I can do whatever with it. Alright sound is that processor going to be worth getting from eBay do you think?

I cant link outside of ocuk for pc parts

you could get an i7 860 for current board but its not really worth it

just scour the auction sites for used z68 or newer z77 motherboards, ones like the asus z68 v pro or z77 v pro

Because of the chance of it packing up whilst I'm at uni and not having the money to do it at the time.

A CPU is the least likely component to "pack up". I upgraded from the i5 750 myself but it was because the chip can't keep up with the latest games. I went for the 4790k but that may be overkill for yourself.

If you're worried about not having the money available if your cpu were to die but can afford it now, I'd just set the money aside and wait until you need to upgrade (and CSGO doesn't need an upgrade :p). You'll most likely get more performance for your money that way.

My i5 750 has been going fine for over 5 years overclocked from day 1, it's the PSU and GPU that have both died and needed replacing :(

i just upgraded my i5 750 to a xeon which is equivalent to a i7 870 for 50 quid from auction site.
if what they say about dx12 is correct then wont really need more cpu power.

my the 750 was good enough its just i got the xeon cheap so did the change.system is good enough to last a few more years i wont even be looking at skylake beyond that possible.

Just a heads up.

On a popular auction site there are quite many Hex Core DELL Precision T5500's, many are loaded with 6, 12 or even 24GB of memory.

Providing the price is correct, one of these would see you 3/4 years at Uni.

As others have commented, just put aside £200 and if it does pack up then buy something similar and second hand.

Until recently I was on i5 760 and upgraded for a 4790K and in hindsight it was definitely an overdue upgrade. Not so much for performance in games, but I do a bit of video editing and well... Why not...

But if budget is of concern then the i5 750 is still a capable CPU and if the motherboard packed up (mine had a faulty RAM slot so I had to use single channel) you could pickup a replacement for less than £25 I would bet. PSU, again pennies for 2nd hand. And another Lynnfield i5 would set you back maybe £40 looking at prices.

I had the same dilemma with upgrade...then I decide not to. OC i5 750 has still plenty of power for my needs. Better spend money on vga.
