HELP! Our Phpbb2 board is being spammed by bots

Hi,

I help run a phpbb2 board with about 650 members on, but we frequently get bouts of bots sign up and spamming the board with porn, selling us viagra e.t.c

We have one of those "type the text you see in the box bellow" things on the signup page, and ask people to verify their account by email, this doesnt work!

Cant anyone offer any surefire ways to beat the bots!

Kittenauth solved our phpBB spam problem. Instead of being able to use OCR software to solve captchas the user has to select the kittens from a small array of photos.

i heard smoeone say that adding random things that people need to do helps stop spam, e.g. have the user solve a simple calculations such as 5 + 2 = , or make them count from 1-9 like 123456789, or like suggested make them have to select the odd picture out

We used to run a phpBB2 forum and came across this exact problem. The trick that worked for us is to not place your forum in the default directory on your website (www.yourdomain.com/phpbb) or not use 'forum' as the directory.

Of course, if you're not using the default directory name, ignore me

We are using the foum extension, but we cant really change it but if worse comes to worse ill try that out.
