Just built my new system and got everything running.

Spec

I7 4770k.
H80 cooler.
SP120 fans in push pull config.
Artic Silver 5
350d case, with two SP120 fans up front.
Asus Maximus VII gene

Now I'm getting idle temps where you would expect them, 32 degrees. (Maybe high?)

But as soon as I put prime95 on a small FFT's test the temps jump to 85 degrees and after a few minutes I get a restart of the system. Using HWMonitor to monitor temps.

Help please

:(

It all seems to be tight, have the h80 set to full

I followed artic silvers instructions on how to apply the compound, ie a vertical line. Is this right? Or have I messed that up?

Thats how I normally apply thermal compound.

I was half in mind to mention if the pump was running but you would be getting high temps on idle which leads me to think the block is not fitted correctly, it may be tight but something is a miss :(

Time to strip it down and check then I guess. The mount on the board was loose, but when reading into it, that is normal.. Seems wrong to me though.

Edit:

Right have solved the loose stand off issue. Windows has decided to do a million updates just as I want to test it. (New install)

Well that didn't fix it. It's slightly better but still hitting over 80 degrees a few seconds into prime.

Right had enough, cooler is junk.

Anyone recommend a similar product with 120mm fans?

I want to keep the noise to a minimum though, Past air coolers I've used were loud. Where do I find CPU clearance?

The h80 should be more than capable of cooling your processor, something else is amiss. This might sound like a silly question but is there a sheet of clear protective plastic on the Base of the block? And if so have you peeled it off?

I had EXACTLY the same problem a while ago and it turned out I had done just that and not peeled the plastic off of the bottom of the block. It was applied so perfectly I hadn't even noticed it was there... Of course most people aren't as daft as me.

Ps sorry for any spelling / punctuation errors, I have typed this on my phone :)

I bought the cooler on the members market here and it had been used in the past. No signs of plastic etc on it and last person to use it said it was fine. I know it should easily be up to the job.. But it's not doing the job at the moment.. Not sure why. Only thing I can think of is fitting the stock retail cooler for now and seeing what temps are thrown up?

Look at temperature vs noise level in this chart.. 6-8times as loud 2-4c hotter than air coolers. ;)

Now look at temperatures when noise levels are similar

You could reattach the stock cooler but I am not sure what it would achieve. We already know there is an issue with the h80 without any comparables needed. Even if you had the worst chip for temps in the world it shouldn't run that hot at stock!

If possible some photos or a video of the mounting might be useful.

Out if interest when you remove the block, how well spread is the thermal paste? And how tightly would you say you are screwing the block down?

I just want to make sure everything else is working as should with stock cooler. Atm the h80 could go in the bin for me, the amount of ££ I've spent on the rest. The spread didn't actually look that bad the second time. A bit thick on one side maybe? It's screwed down as much as it can go as the stand offs stop you being able to over tighten it.

Right something isn't right, stock cooler on and I'm getting 52 degrees idle and in prime it's shooting up to 90+ :/. Cleaned artic 5 off with lint free cloth. Just not right that is it? Side of case is off for what the matters.

Was it a brand new 4770k? The only thing I can think of that hasn't been tried is poor contact between the core and IHS.

This is normal on a haswell cpu guys, you can remount cooler, change thermal paste, change to a better air cooler or spend hundreds on custom watercooling. None will make one iota of difference in temps. The chips are gimped from the factory due to intels shoddy ihs and paste job. My best advice, dont run p95/ibt, theese cpu's cant cope with theese programs. Even at stock speed, they cant cope with high loads.

52c IDLE with Intel heatsink is NOT normal, that's for sure.

Reset any overclock you have, check your motherboard isn't automatically overclocking and applying silly voltages.

The only three things I can think of is that either;

You have a bad CPU (maybe even one that faulty?).
Auto (or manual overclock?) applying silly volts.
User error while installing.

What your temperature spread across the cores? Are they roughly inline with each other?

If you are overclocking then the temps on the h80 are what I would consider normal.

I want to overclock but have everything at stock and was busy testing stability at stock and temps before I went for a overclock. Going out to get some TIM cleaner as I wasn't expecting having to remove the cooler last night. Give everything a good clean and see where I go from there.
