help overclocking 4770k

Hi there,i'm looking for a bit of help with my overclock.
I've done some basic o'cing on my previous 2500k,but am still overwhelmed by the amount of options in the bios of my new mobo.

So far i have gotten to 4.5 at 1.296v,which btw seems like a good enough clock for my needs,the thing is all i have really changed is the core voltage and the multiplier to 45......but i cant get the voltage to go down when i'm idle,i have tried adaptive voltage as recommended,but i always seem to bsod loading windows,as the oc doesn't seem to stick using adaptive voltage.

Any advice or fine tuning that is recommended?

Temps are all good btw,around 29-30 idle and less than 60 under load(not using prime or that,just a few games and encoding stuff)
I have delidded and put mx-4 on the die,i have some clu here too,but i'm a bit wary of any ill effects it may have on the die,so am reluctant to use it until i read a bit more on how other users find it.
I delidded using an old hard drive and a hammer

8gb ram(running at 1333 until i get my main oc sorted)

What ghz are you wanting to run at ideally? as your board will do most if not all the work for you. (I have the same board and chip at 4.6ghz with a few clicks in the bios)

I think even with fixed voltage and the power saving options enabled in bios, voltage will go down at idle. Using the balanced power option in windows.

I would take whatever i can get with safe voltages lol,but 4.6 seems good for everday use i would think,i just worry about auto overclocking giving too much voltage etc,but if you can recommend some good settings i'll give it a go and see how i get on thanks

I used the cpu auto stepup to set it to 4.6ghz and set my ram to xmp to run at 1866mhz.

Voltage that goes to my chip on a full load is 1.28v according to ai suite.

You could set it to auto do it and make a note of the voltages it sets up to begin with and manually add them in yourself after.

Use offset voltage to make your cpu vcore go down at idle.
Use speedstep to make cpu multiplier go down at idle.
Use EIST to make VID go down at idle.

Ok i tried the cpu step-up set to 4.6 and set xmp for memory,which led to blue screen after blue screen

Then i tried 4.4 cpu step-up which worked a treat,unfortunately though i saw a few spikes of up to 1.5v + :eek:

just using convertxtodvd.

That was my worry with auto setup,and although the voltages were going right down to 0.016 at idle i cant afford for it to be hitting those high voltages,even though my temps were still ok.
Any more advice would be great :cough: 8-pack

Dont use auto overclocking, it sucks. Auto always uses too much vcore and can be dangerous if it goes too high.

Just use manual voltage and up the multipler.

Ok been doing some fiddling again,and i seem to be stable ish at 4.5ghz,using Aida system stability test for 10 mins( i know it's quite a short time,but any other settings i've tried have crashed the pc before 5 mins in).
Here are the settings i've used.

Temps seem great( i bit the bullet and used the coolaboratory liquid ultra between the die and ihs) and voltages seem ok,could be worse.

The real pain i'm having though is getting it to boot using adaptive or offset mode,it just seems to bluescreen whenever i try.

What kind of offset should i be looking for to try and keep it stable? so it clocks down at idle etc.

Also once i get this sorted should i move to the uncore next and try the same as with core,just upping the multi,and upping the cache voltage bit by bit until i get as close to 1:1 ratio as possible?

I wouldn't mind oc'ing my ram a little as well,but i'll cross that bridge if i ever get there

Offset either subtracts or adds vcore to your cpu's VID value. So if your VID was 1.300, and you use offset +100mv, your vcore would be 1.400.

Ok little update,
Overclock seems stable doing most other things......but i tried to have a shot on the B4 beta last night and it would crash as soon as i was going into a game,not a bluescreen or that just a freeze,which i had to manually reset.
I know B4 beta has a lot of bugs etc atm,so i dropped back to stock clocks to check it and it worked perfectly.

These are my current settings:
core ratio 45
cache ratio 43
ram 8gb xmp@1600mhz
core voltage 1.34
cache voltage 1.25
initial cpu input voltage 1.9
all c-states enabled

do i need more core voltage? or cache?

Also reading through other posts on here i see 8-pack recommends having system agent at 1.2
Iod 1.2
Ioa 1.2
Pch 1.2
will setting these help with stability when gaming etc?
