Hi everyone,

I have had my current PC build for about 2years now, with some components a bit older. I was running a core2duo on a gigabyte board. Power supply is a Thermaltake 500W. Over the weekend I went to switch the pc off, it closed all programs, logged out of windows and the monitor went off (No signal), but the base remained on.

I left it for about 20min, but still the base remained on with no signal to my monitor. I held the power button in for almost 30sec with no effect. I was then forced to use the master power switch on the power supply. Now whenever I flick the master power back on, the pc automatically comes back on. (But still not getting any signal to monitor, there is also no initial beep and none of the usual sounds while booting.)

I spoke to some people who suggested it might be the motherboard. Following this, I have now invested in a new Asus P8P67 Pro motherboard with an i5 2500K processor and Corsair Vengeance RAM.

I built the system up last night, connected it all up and when I connected the power cable, same thing happened and the CPU error LED on the motherboard stayed on.

Can anyone suggest the problem? Is it the power supply? can this cause the CPU error LED to come on?

Thanks

if there is a LED system for errors, doesnt it say what kind of error it is ?
have you connected all power to MOBO ?have you tried changing GPU ?

Sounds a bit like a faulty power switch on the case or it could be the PSU as you have said.

Hi,

No I have not tried re-seating cpu or re-setting anything as I did not expect to see the same problem with a new mb and cpu. Only common factor between 2 builds are my optical drives, GPU, sound card and power supply.

I will try the options mentioned above. How likely is this to work? I would like my pc back up and running by the weekend, and if I need a new power supply, would like to order it today to receive tomorrow.

Regards

As said the common factors are the PSU and case and GPU, soundcard.

You can check the soundcard just by removing it.

A two year old PSU should still be OK, but I think that an investment there will be worthwhile, maybe a good 650w would fit the bill.

My only other thought was the case, but it is less likely than the PSU in my opinion.

The loss of video may be down to lack of power to the card?

The error light on the MB shows its CPU error.
The case is a Thermaltake Armor JR, and have not ever given any problem. GPU is fairly new (Probably the newest part) and the power supply is probably one of the older parts at 3+ Years. Not sure what the life expectancy are of PSU.
Could parts such as the GPU and soundacard have the effect on the system I am experiencing? All fans spin, drives open up etc. Just it wont switch off when holding the power button. And it automatically starts up as soon as the power is turned on at the back of the PSU.

what gpu are you using ?

also, remove the sound card from the system, this will at least rule it out of causing any issues however unlikely it is.

Sorry, cant remember the exact model code of GPU, but its a double output, about a year old NVidia that uses 2 6-pin power connectors.

unless you've got a smaller gfx card to use as testing (ie 1 or no pci-e power connector needed), remove the gfx card from the system and see if it attempts to boot, should beep cos there is no gfx card.

Will try removing GPU. Do I need to remove the card from the MB, or can I just dis-connect the power to the GPU?
I am not all the knowledgeable about everything that goes on with pc's. What is the beep from a computer it normally makes when starting up? Normally within the first few seconds. As this is not happening, and has not happened since the problem started.

never really checked the single beep tbh, i've always taken it as a sign the bios has been checked, everything looks ok, so it boots.

if your not getting it would imagine its detecting some sort of issue as it runs its checks.

i'd just trying unplugging the power connectors to start, this should remove the power requirement, but you might get a boot issue cos it hasn't got enough power to the gpu, but at least we expect that.

Ok, so I did everything mentioned above, but no luck, so went out and got a 600W Corsair PSU. Connected it all up, and no more problem. However I now have a new problem. The pc boots up, has that initial beep and goes past the bios. Sees the RAM and then shows a black screen with the windows loading bar at the bottom. After a few seconds A blue screen flashes up for less than 0.5sec and it restarts the whole process.

Is this because I am still using the same hard drives, and have not done a clean install? Is there a easy way I can fix it?

Thanks

could try going into safe mode, uninstalling all your drivers then installing new chipset ones etc.

but when swapping mobos always better to do a fresh/clean install if you can.

Thanks,
Will use a secondary HDD to do clean install and then try to do a fresh instal on main hdd with all data backed up.
Might try safe mode first, so if I can get into windows, I can install the required drivers.
