Hi just put together the following:

Asrock ConroeXFire-eSATA2 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard

Intel Core 2 DUO E6300 "LGA775 Conroe" 1.86GHz (1066FSB) - OEM

Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro CPU Cooler (Socket 775)

G.Skill 2GB DDR2 LA PC2-5400 (2x1GB) CAS4 Dual Channel Kit (F2-5400PHU2-2GBLA)

Connect3D ATI Radeon X1800 XT 256MB GDDR3 AVIVO TV-Out/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail

Samsung SpinPoint P HD160JJ 160GB SATA-II 8MB Cache - OEM

NEC ND3550 16x16 DVD±RW Dual Layer ReWriter (Black)

CA-048-AN Antec SLK3800BUK Black Quiet Midi Tower Case - 400W SmartPower PSU (CA-048-AN)

KB-073-LG Logitech Cordless Desktop S 510 - Black/Silver (KB-073-LG)

Was working fine for about 5 days but suddenly now will not turn on. When I power up I can hear all the fans spinning but nothing else happens. Monitor goes into power saving mode. I called up tech support and they said that the power supply was not powerful enough. I have just ordered Akasa Ultra Quiet 460W Paxpower Active PFC ATX2.0 PSU - Black Nickel (CA-003-AK) will this get my system working again??

Don't think it would be the powersupply, in all honestly, Antec make quallity PSUs.

Remove all the ram from the motherboard and turn it on, does it beep ?
If not, then you either have a short or a hardware fault, to rule out a short, build the system out of the case and test it.

i had a problem like this with a asrock socket A board, was fine for around 3 days and then suddenly stopped. The fans span but got nothing on screen, turned out to be the motherbaord had died.Do you not get any beeps from the motherboard?

Sounds like motherboard to me. I had exactly the same problem & it was the motherboard. Try re-seating the RAM or something & then turn it on...

When I had a faulty motherboard I used to have to re-seat the perfectly working RAM to get it to boot. I got a new motherboard and everything worked 100%

ok I took it out of case - nothing. Then I took the RAM out and MoBo beeps 3times repeatedly and stops when RAM is back it - so dont think is MoBO. I'm pretty sure that its the graphics card that is making most of the noise when I start up. Am getting new PSU today so will try that - never know it may work

Hmmm, you should have no problems with that PSU on that setup.
I'm taking a longshot here, but I think it could be your CPU. I've come accross 2 PC's In the past with same problem (fans spinning, display flickers off instantly) and both times it was dead CPU. This was on old slot 1 Pentium 2's though :p
If your MB is giving POST beep errors when Memory is out then your board is fine. Also if it was your graphics you'd get post beeps. If your CPU is dead you don't get any POST beeps.

just spoken to tech support again and now they say that its the ram. apparently there have been some compatibility probs with the G Skill Ram

Really? Surely your display would stay on though if that's the case
Ah well, hope you get it sorted anyway :D

yeah ive really got no idea. going to go round a mates this tonight or the weekend and try in his RAM and VGA. Not really too happy about this especially as I had to spend money on a PSU that was not any use

I was beaten to it by Andy298, I think its your CPU. The big drawback with build- your- own is identifying faulty components. The symtoms are the same as when I had a CPU die. I presume that you are not getting to POST.
Its too easy to blame the wrong component, and end up buying unnecessary replacements.
I would strongly advise trying a spare CPU if you have a compatible one available, and likewise RAM and graphics card (an old pci one would do).
Its best to test with just the bare minimum of MB, PSU, RAM & GFX card, out of case if possible with no other expansion cards or drives attached, changing one thing at a time. Try RAM sticks one at a time too.

As tech support say its the ram, it makes sense to try that first, so hopefully you've got an old stick available or can borrow one.

But why did it work okay for 5 days, and then both sticks fail?

My monies on the CPU.
