Hi

I've been trying to pick the components for a new build for what feels like forever. PC is mainly for gaming with some video/photo editing. I already have keyboard, mouse, OS and a monitor (but I would like a larger monitor).

Here is my latest basket:
EPIC BUNDLE: Intel 4790K, Gigabyte Z97X-Gaming 7, Kingston 16GB 2400MHz Kit, Superflower 750W PSU £551.96
XFX Radeon R9 290 DD Black Edition 4096MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card with FREE Kingston 60GB SSD £289.99
Corsair Carbide 540 High Airflow ATX Cube Case - £98.95
Crucial MX100 256GB SATA 2.5” 7mm SSD + 9.5mm Adapter £79.99
Raijintek EreBoss High Performance CPU Cooler Black £29.99
OcUK 24x DVD±RW SATA ReWriter (Black) - OEM £19.99
Asus VN279Q 27" Widescreen Super-Slim Bezel LED Monitor - £233.99

Total Inc shipping: £1,327.79

I'm a little over budget but I can live with that.

Does this spec look ok? Have I missed anything obvious? Could I get better performance for less?

Thanks for any advice or suggestions.

Swapped the psu for a bigger 850W which will allow you to crossfire R9 290 if you want at a later date. For a single gpu then 550W is enough. The EVGA is a rebadged Superflower, but you get a better 10 year warranty.

The powercolor R9 290 is a better gpu than the XFX. It is supposed to come with 8GB free Ram but for some reason it isn't showing in the description picture. It might be a good idea to check with customer services beforehand. If the offer is still on, then you could always sell the free ram, or keep it as spare.

Thanks.

Any suggestions for a different case & heatsink? Ideally I want a quiet system and I would prefer a plain black case but reviews/price guided me to that corsair.

Thanks Tamzzy

I have thought about the liquid cooling but I have absolutely no experience with it. How do you fit it, do you need to refill it, buy a pump etc?

Also I think that case might be out of stock but I am considering this one now:
Corsair Obsidian 450D High Airflow Mid-Tower Case.

it's an all-in-one. ie you buy and fit it, no other worries
and the phanteks enthoo pro is a better case compared to the 450d (and its the same-ish price too)

Ok you sold me on the phanteks. It looks like the fans that come with it are a bit noisy. Any suggestions for good, quiet replacements?

The H105 is a very good cooler, but if you are looking for something that is 'quiet' out of the box, then I would suggest the BeQuiet Dark Rock Pro 3.

The only problem is that it is out of stock with ocuk, so you would have to buy it elsewhere (Or ask cs when it might be due back in stock).

The H105 can be made quieter by replacing the fans, but that adds to the cost.

I think the EVGA psu is worth the extra over the Seasonic. It has a far better warranty (10 yr rather than 5yr), and it is more efficient. I have seen a few complaints about the fan noise on the Seasonic unit.

OK so I'm nearly ready to go with this.

I'll be fitting two extra hard drives and using the SSD for the OS. I've also got a sound card I'd like to install. Is there anything else I've forgotten about? Do you have any alternative suggestions for roughly the same price?

That looks fine. I would double check that the ram offer is still valid with the powercolor gpu before ordering.
Even though it is still in the description, the picture of the ram has gone from the listing. I wouldn't want you to end up with no ram.

Also the sound card should fit fine as the board has the old type pci slot as well as the newer pci-e x1 slots.

get the enthoo pro with a window!
i know it's out of stock at the moment though. ask customer service when they'll be in stock ;p

LOL. Are you on commission for that case?

I've decided to leave the monitor for now until I've had a chance to do more research on them. Brings the price down to just over £1000.

I'll check the offer on the RAM in the morning.

Hi again. I bought the Phanteks and the H105 but I'm having some trouble connecting it all together - see my post here. Tamzzy - you got any idea how to connect all this up?
