Help, please

I've recently just built up my system, and it's sitting finished next to me.

It's got nothing plugged in to it, save the power cable. When I turn it on, it appears power is getting everywhere (DVD drive lights up, all fans start spinning, motherboard LED is on), but it turns off after about 1.5seconds.

What could be causing this?

What do you mean "nothing plugged into it"? Do you get any POST beeps? Connected up the system speaker?

Yes I've connected up the speaker (does it matter which way around it goes on?) but it doesn't beep whatsoever.

no providing it's on the correct pins.. check you have because the BIOS beep are quite important if you have a problem.

I appeared to have fixed it.

Silly me, I only put the larger socket for power supply on the motherboard, and forgot about the smaller 4pin one.
